Chase Young re-signed to a 3-year, $51 million deal (31 Viewers)

I’m glad he’s coming back. There is plenty of film on him and the coaches liked what they’ve seen. The man has talent, hopefully these coaches can get him to consistently play to his physical abilities.

People are allowed to agree and disagree.

ESPN (more specifically, one writer) disagrees with the move. He is no more qualified to grade the move than anyone on this message board.

He seems to want us to tank. We aren’t.

And this is the kicker for me.

There are actual people in the fan base and in the media that want the Saints to tank the off-season. The Saints have already declared they don’t intend to. So these types of articles and posts are going to pop up each and every time we make any move.

It’s annoying how bitter people all over the Internet become just because a football team isn’t following THEIR plan. And sometimes you get the feeling that they’re now rooting against the team so that they can say, “See, I was right!”

If this was the case, then why is his young behind (no pun intended), on his 3rd team?

Washington fire sale and got rid of people who could acquire draft capitol for.
SF tried to resign him but didn't have any cap space. He also had a neck injury that hampered his play and SF didn't want to pull cap gimmicks unsure if he'd be 100% after neck surgery. Despite that injury and pending surgery, he was also a hot free agent last year.
Saints weren't sure if he'd comeback 100% either after surgery, so they signed him to 1 year deal with the money he wanted.
He was also garnering lots of interest this free agency.

Fair critique. His effort has been an area of focus since being shipped out of DC. However, what other options were there? Mick's cap has limited to a certain price range. Considering what Miles and Crosby just got, this is not bad.
You don't put up his stats if you are taking off 2 out of 3 plays...
Just because some dumb talking head on TV said it doesn't make it true!

Now this is a big surprise to me.
Does this mean we are still rebuilding?
It means that the NFL forces each franchise to field a team each year. Without renegotiating contracts with wild abandon we wouldn't have any players or money to buy some. The league simply won't let any team go into the season being over the salary cap. The Saints couldn't just cut players that they would still have to pay anyway. Anyone who didn't see this coming hasn't been paying attention.

How about give us a snippet for those of us that don't want to give ESPN any money.
The first paragraph is a doozy:
The deal: Three years, $51 million
Grade: D

The Saints need an intervention. Their affinity for shopping is out of control, and it is saddling poor New Orleans fans year after year after year with a team that might win nine games but has next to no shot at winning the Super Bowl. And every time the Saints make another ill-advised signing -- at this point, they are pretty much all ill-advised -- they kick the mediocrity-at-best can down the road once again.

Talking head. :ROFLMAO: You assume too much. He was a top-five pick that was supposed to be on the Bosa level in terms of sacks and impact, but he's not lived up to his potential since being injured in DC. I said I was okay with signing and was responding to another post.

There's a substack called Trench Warfare that tracks what they call True Pressure Rate for pass rushers. In short, unblocked pressures (low quality pressures) count for 0.5 points, wins against average blockers (high quality pressures) count for one point, and wins against blockers categorized as above average or better (rare high quality pressures) count for 1.25 points.

Chase Young was seventh in TPR last year, with one rare high quality pressure, 29 high quality pressures, and 29 low quality pressures, giving him a score of 44.75. He also had one of the better high:low quality pressure ratios, at 1.04.

If we can limit escape paths for the QB, Young may be able to capitalize this year on his ability to win at the LOS.

The stigma with his slacking dates back all the way to Washington, then SF. You think he was just loafing around here? If the perception of him, while truthful, then he wouldn’t be a journeyman in his young career. Y’all keep talking like he’s some bad mama jama, but he’s a guy who has literally played like Jane while looking like Tarzan
If he played like jane what does that say about the rest of the D Line. Who they play like? even though he play like Jane AND taking 1 play off every 3 plays, he still played more consistent then all our D Line. So he either really good or every one else is really bad.

That's a lot of money for 5 sacks.

Sometimes you don't need to go super deep looking at pressures, etc. Sometimes, a guy is on his third team and is 25 and puts up very average production and it should be kinda obvious, he's not worth this money.

that’s the big thing, IMO. I said this in another thread about Young, but he’s the king of the Almost Sack. So many times he’ll dominate the tackle and push them back only for the QB to slip away as Young takes the wrong angle. Maybe with a better NT this can get cleaned up. Or better coaching.

If Young could have finished on more of those plays I think most people would be happy with the signing. Of course if he had finished he might have gotten more money elsewhere.

All that to say I’m ok with this signing. DE/Edge is one of the weakest position groups. Young and Grandy make a solid duo and at least the team isn’t forced to reach for a player in the draft.

Your argument doesn’t hold as much weight as you think it does
