Still feels odd to me that we have opened up so much cap space (26 Viewers)

He made a contradictory statement unless I'm reading something wrong.

First he says:

Then in detail he say:

So I'm not really sure what he's trying to say there? To me it makes no sense to trade him after you just guaranteed paying his 30mil salary. I would only see that if Carr refuses to play unless they trade him. Sounds like a lot of nothing and he just typed a headline to grab attention and nothing was really behind it.
A trade after a restructure would have the effect of selling cap space to another team in return for a draft pick or picks. I seem to be remembering it happening 8 or 9 years ago but don’t remember the particulars.

Think about this - before the restructure we either had to play him or do a post June 1 cut - for cap reasons. If we did either of those we would have had NO money for free agency. Re-structuring him gave us money for free agency.

What I don't know is how the restructure affects a post June 1 cut? If we found another QB could we still cut him after June 1 and NOT be in cap hell? Maybe a scenario like THIS is still on the table.....
That would be throwing away 30+ million. If they intended to do that then they would have used the early June 1 cut rule.

The impass w/ Carr, but the decision to hold on to tells me a # of things. Regardless of if they like/love Rattler they recognize that where he's at in his development wouldn't allow them to meet their goals. However, the obvious lack of satisfaction w/ his availability last year and mention of an incomplete grade on Carr means that some of the sheen/gloss has worn off.

There's a slight change of tune w/ regards to him. Still feel like they can win w/ him, but the "he's the guy were going to build around for future success" talk seems to have subsided.

Such is the reason why I can't rule out the Saints moving up or selecting a QB at some point this draft. If they're going to end the relationship at some point they're going to have to feel better than they do currently about the QB room. Either that's going to happen w/ Rattler's development, or they'll need to invest somethign more than a 4th or 5th rounder into the position.

Personally I think it would be more wise to allow Rattler those #2 snaps during Camp and no extra battle w/ Haener being 3rd team QB. Meanwhile you continue to try to build up the team around them so that it can support whomever your young QB ends up being. Trading up for a Ward or even taking Shadeur would immediately stunt Rattlers ability to grow. If you love him as much as we've been hearing...you want to see him grow.

He needs snaps and a vision. That vision and those snaps would get muddy w/ the addition of a new QB this year.

The Saints had zero leverage to ask Carr for or get a pay cut. It's such a non-issue. Carr was right to say it as a pre-emptive way of saying, 'hey, you gave me a contract, the crap is not my fault, don't even think of projecting leverage over me you do not have.' Also at issue at the time was the threat hanging over the Saints that if Carr could not pass a physical with his injuries, he would have been guaranteed a $30M roster bonus.

Carr was just saying that 'business is business,' and whatever money you committed to him was his, period.

Now some of you are wondering if the Saints are going to flush Carr and another $17M June 1 or later, and for what exactly in return? Nothing worth $17M, that's for sure. That's a dead money charge on the 2025 cap and does not free up any new money. They just resolved and restructured for him to stay, so pivoting away from him makes no sense.

This is far more business decision than embrace of this player, as we all likely agree he is not the future.

Everything else you read or hear is alot of useless noise, in my opinion.

The headline of Carr's restructure is that they would prefer to pay his exit bill off the 2026 cap, when it may be less painful than having done it in 2025.

Did you see/read the article by Albert Breer about the Saints and Carr? Its a pretty interesting read and take. Basically, even with the Carr re-structure, there appears to still be some rumblings behind the scenes that Carr playing NO in 2025 is not set in stone and they COULD trade him. It would be an after June 1 trade IF it were to happen. I'll see if I can find it.
Yeah. Nothing is set in stone and gms are always answering phone calls. If Carr is still with the team, I am rooting for him to play well. If not then I am hoping for the best for either Rattler or a draft pick.

You guys seriously need to get past this. 😂

Just came to post that it's almost 4pm. I'm actually giddy something could get announced.

League year started at 4 pm eastern, so we are already rolling.

Nothing burger so far.

Just announcements of stuff we already knew and a couple of unannounced signings - Hargrave to Minnesota, Engram to Denver.

I agree with all of this, but fans have been looking at this through the eyes of the team. From Carr's perspective, it's time for an extension. He doesn't want to be a bridge to nowhere (for him).

In a perfect world from Carr's perspective, the Saints would be division champ and both he and DA would be getting long term extensions this offseason. The coach got fired mid-season and he's basically playing on a one year deal. Starting QB's don't play on a one year deal very often. I could see an extend me or trade me attitude from the Carr camp. We will see.

If the last few years are to be viewed as a blueprint, we generally have only restructured guys once we have the services of a respective free agent we want to sign secured.

I’ve never seen us basically max out the restructures ahead of time.

I really wonder if we have a trade getting ready to be processed at 4 pm (et) today.

I think we still probably going make 1 or 2 splashes probably Asante Samual JR or some DB and a receiver/guard. Only reason I say that most of the years it always feels that we at least have what would be a respectable starting lineup before the draft. Then Draft BPA with a hint of need if that make sense. But looking at CBs especially, I wouldnt feel comfortable with current group and a rookie. Same then the Guards/WR group but CB looks very thin

In my years of being here on this forum, I never argue or discuss anything involving cap numbers or players contract. I don't understand it and choose not to understand it. I see way too many overreaction and assumptions. I am not a gm, agents, lawyers, or contract experts. How Loomis move numbers around to meet deadlines and sign free agent is impressive, I will admit.
I just want the team to win. As we all do. Whether they manage the cap this way or another way I care not, as long as we’re winning. 😊

And I don’t fully understand it either.
