2023 MLS Thread (1 Viewer)

Not sure how many are following MLS’s pathological need to shoot itself in the foot while it’s in their mouth, but

of course.

They want to protect the MLS from any perceived "lack of talent" so to prohibit MLS Next kids from "showing out" against an MLS squad.

THATS THE WHOLE POINT.

Everyone LOVES an underdog.

Well, not everyone apparently.

I don’t quite get it. So they aren’t allowing the younger all star team to play the MLS All Star Team?

its an "open" cup- So theoretically, any team can participate ( think golf- US Open- where an amateur can qualify and play next to Phil ) - so long as they belong to a Pro League ( See below pyramid - so any team from first 4 levels are eligible )

MLS NEXT PRO is 3rd tier

So USL League 1 and NISA are BOTH in same tier and ELIGIBLE, but MLS NEXT is now not.

Now, i just read that the reason, if correct, makes a bit more sense. MLS teams were looking to field their MLS NEXT ( aka reserve team ) INSTEAD of their full Pro level ( "first team ) roster.

MLS apparently wanted to open more "match dates" in season- ( read: more gate revenue ) as opposed to playing the Rochester Rhinos in a 2500 seat field.

its.
always.
about.
money.

Yup money grab
Not money so they can buy better players mind you
Just money for their pockets and perhaps some bribes to land new stadium land deals

And if they wanted their ‘next’ players to play they could have easily expanded rosters for this tournament and called up the next players

This was going to be my next comment.

EPL/Bundes/La Liga- they all do this

Manchester United will play FA Cup match but will sit 3-5 and replace with reserve players....gives them playing time on grand stage and its still Manchester United playing.

gooblydegook

"health and safety of our players"

reads " we shell out entirely too much in contracts to have our highest paid player injured in some meaningless tournament when we are chasing higher dollar tourneys"

MLS owners arent looking to wait the requisite 30-40 years to be rolling in the money- they want it now.
