{2023 Thread Bumped} Underhill Giving No Quarter to Nick Wright (1 Viewer)

Nick Wright is clearly one of those people who go into attack mode when they don’t understand something.

I’m more of a “let me try to understand it” individual.

With that said…….I have often wondered how we keep doing the “salary to bonus” conversion, if any salary cap gurus wanna educate me.

I hope this isn’t another thing that dozens of teams do, but we get made an example of.

The Saints salary cap has been handled in a similar fashion, at least since we won the Superbowl. There are different ways to manage the finances of a team. The organization has been playing for today and figure out the future when it gets here. They continue to believe we have a chance to win now which is the rationalization they use to operate the way we do, in a somewhat debt position. The way we do it has been working. That said, it is time to hold onto the draft picks we have, not trading up. skip the high-priced FAs. (After Carr) Trading back and get a few more picks. Rookie contracts will help the cap currently or in the future.

Nick Wright is not completely wrong. We are losing players due to our cap that is pushed back etc. It's pretty factual, we don't have a fountain of infinity cap.
Talk to me when we lose someone who actually can still contribute in a big way. Losing some of these guys is actually addition by subtraction. We can do better than 7 sacks among 3 defensive linemen.

we could've had Onyemata or Tuttle back on those contracts if we had wanted to
No doubt. Certainly could have kept them, but sometimes it's time to move on from certain players. We need to get better at pressuring the QB and forcing turnovers. That was a huge weakness for the defense last season.

we'll sign replacements at cheaper price points.
Isn't that a good thing? If they're equivalent or better replacements for the same $, you do it every time. It could also be that they want to spend a little more to get better at the position as well. If they're not adequately replaced, then you might have a point. But there's nothing preventing the team from signing someone equal or better.
