{2023 Thread Bumped} Underhill Giving No Quarter to Nick Wright (2 Viewers)

we could've had Onyemata or Tuttle back on those contracts if we had wanted to
No doubt. Certainly could have kept them, but sometimes it's time to move on from certain players. We need to get better at pressuring the QB and forcing turnovers. That was a huge weakness for the defense last season.

we'll sign replacements at cheaper price points.
Isn't that a good thing? If they're equivalent or better replacements for the same $, you do it every time. It could also be that they want to spend a little more to get better at the position as well. If they're not adequately replaced, then you might have a point. But there's nothing preventing the team from signing someone equal or better.

yea, its nothing to get upset about. Saints have to be careful with our signings and lack thereof. We are in tread lightly years and have been for about 2 years now.
Well, thankfully, we have a GM who knows what he's doing. 16 years in the business with a pretty solid track record. You'd think they deserve the benefit of the doubt. But armchair GMs and all that.

Nick Wright is not completely wrong. We are losing players due to our cap that is pushed back etc. It's pretty factual, we don't have a fountain of infinity cap.
Sigh...it actually is. That's the point. As long as the cap exists the way it does, it's basically a fountain of infinity.

What makes you say they signed for more money than we could afford? Could it not be that we just wanted to go in a different direction? We literally just gave the biggest contract in free agency a week ago

RIGHT. If money was the issue, the Saints could have signed Jimmy G and kept both players. That's not what the Saints wanted to do.

I wish people would get it. The Saints sign who they want to sign. If they wanted Onyemata to be a Saint no matter what, he'd be a Saint. They had a price in mind, and Onyemata wanted more than that. They let him walk.

Letting guys like Onyemata and Tuttle is the very definition of NOT "kicking the can down the road."

The Saints have been strategic in the guys they give long-term contracts.

The organization has always ends up under the cap by re-structuring deals and letting guys walk who they think are asking too much, or they have other plans for re-signing players, etc.

The details can get granular, but the basic premise is that any team can be "over the cap" before another fiscal year begins, but with the cap going steadily up, re-working contracts has been a SOP to get cap compliance, often with a bit of wiggle room to sign a few FAs.

I think we’ve lost some good talent due to the way the cap is managed, yes. Not speaking about Tuttle and Onyemata tho. Lol

I respect that others may not see it the same way I do.
Sure, but that often has more to do with players and teams going in different directions than purely dollars and salary cap. Every team in the league deals with good players coming and going. Nature of the business.

This is how the budget FA philosophy narrative starts.
