Aaron Glenn and the Saints: Smart Hire or Familiar Misstep? (merged) (1 Viewer)

It does not matter to me whether the coach comes from the offensive or defensive side of the ball. If we had a young quarterback picked high in the draft to develop, I would favor a creative offensive coach, but we don't. Rattler has some talent and could develop, but in all probability, he is not our quarterback of the future.

I do not know or know enough about Aaron Glenn so it is unfair for me to judge him on his leadership. My concern is complacency given his relationships in the building--that he will not say this team ranks near the bottom in the league and will shy away from expressing views that will reflect badly on what the Saints as an organization have been doing. For starters, I think we need someone with no ties to this organization who will be brutally honest in his assessment of the team's personnel and organization. In short, because of his years in New Orleans, I am afraid that a Glenn hiring will provide a bit of comfort to management and ownership. I am terrified of the team hiring Dennis Allen lite.

hard no. fresh face needed with new regime. but kubiak must stay
Kubiak can stay, but only if he agrees to remove that clause in his contract that allows him to only work 2 quarters per game.

No. Maybe he’ll be a better head coach then a DC. But likely not.

Dennis Allen was a better DC. Our secondary went from average to shut down when Glenn left and DA came in. Regardless of what anyone says about DA being a head coach you can’t deny he was a very good defensive coordinator. Point being, being a good defensive coordinator currently doesn’t translate well to being a head coach in the NFL any longer.

Look at Mike MacDonald. He was a great defensive coordinator for the Ravens. Even better than Dennis Allen. Yet he’s not doing so hot up in Seattle currently.

Look around the league. How many successful head coaches are there that came from the defensive side of the ball? None? 1? 2? Now look at how many successful head coaches came from the offensive side of the ball. A dozen? Almost two dozen?

For whatever reason, offensive coaches make for better head coaches in this league over the last 5-10 years.

We need a head coach from the offensive side of the ball.

Besides. Glenn’s defense is a bit overrated and is partially protected by an offense that controls the flow with Gibbs and Montgomery.
Lions have lost a bunch of guys and the Aidan Hutchinson injury really hurt that defense. That said, I really just hope they go elsewhere with the coaching search, like an offensive minded coach. If they go defensive, think I prefer Flores.

Horrible idea, Saints need an offensive head coach with no prior ties to this franchise

Of the 18 teams currently in the playoffs or in the hunt, their coaches are:
Offensive HC - 11
Defensive HC - 6
ST HC - 1

That being said, it's a "NO" from me on Aaron Glenn only because of the familiarity factor. I'd have no problem with taking a shot with Vrabel or even Flores.
