So the algiers ferry is supposed to be cut off in about a month and a half - the state has cut funding (wow, really?) and no private business has stepped up.
So I get to the dock this AM and there are about 7 new LED screens installed all over it

What's your question?

Oh, and welcome to New Orleans. You must be new here if this seems different or strange to you. :hihi:

Just remember that any pol who tells you the CCC tolls need to be extended in order to save the ferry is a liar or an idiot (still looking at YOU, Jacqueline Brechtel Clarkson).

That link I just posted above mentions that. Saying some voters thought they were voting to fund the ferrys.

Would be a shame if they shut them down. I always thought the Worlds Fair Gondolas should have stayed.

that is strange. Either the screens were ordered a year ago and just came in, or someone has stepped up and it isn't known yet, or someone from where the ferry is going was given permission to start renovating early.

Or, it is Louisiana politics and the right hand does not know what the left is doing. Oh darn.:jpshakehead:

It is not a good thing to have the ferry shut down. I know you will feel it harder in Algiers but the rest of the city will feel it to. The connection with old Algiers is as old as the city and it is not the same backtracking to find the entrance to the GNO. I have sometimes taken my grandfather for joy rides on that sucker when I could not think of anything else to get him out and about. People bristle and cause commotion when our old restaurants close, well this is just as worthy of saving.

Knowing NOLA, this is more than likely the case.

Those things were pretty scary.

And I'm not talking about fear of heights - I loved being up there. I'm talking about fear of shoddy workmanship.

Ahhhhh ahahahaaaha. Pegged it.

She has been at the helm for waaaayyyy too long. Gotta be going on 20 years or more? Unfortunately, no one has really ever stepped up to take her place.

I saw a number on that website NCSaint posted. Call them and ask. Let us know what you find out.

i followed this issue pretty closely and voted for the tolls for the ferry and it was only afterwards (when the vote was so close) that i'd found out that that the ferry funded had already been removed well before the vote and the shut down date had already been "announced"
not sure who they announced it to, b/c again i'd been trying to be an informed citizen about this issue

that being said, i've seen the way the state maintains the interstates and highways, and if there's any physical way for a pothole to form on a bridge, i'm sure we'll see that soon enough

Even if the ferries get shut down for a little while, which I doubt they will, this will all work out. This is the way of politics in this area. Officials need to throw public tantrums and threaten to take away things the public love in order to get their way. See the lights on the CCC for a wonderful example. The ferries need to be reconsidered anyway. They should be a crown jewel of the riverfront. We should have beautiful landings with shops and food at all locations, including Jackson Ave. Clearly our local government isn't capable of facilitating such a thing.

I understand that sentiment, which is why we (wife and I) originally voted for the tolls in November. Yesterday, we early voted against it.

You guys who thought you were voting for the ferries is what makes me so absolutely disgusted with this situation. It is nothing against you. You meant well, clearly. It is the fact that our politicians went so far as to spread outright lies while threatening something we love in order to get access to a blank check. I'm seriously considering never voting again for any politician who supported the tolls.

You can also blame the Friends of the Ferry crowd for this as well. They were actively telling anyone who would listen that once the tolls were upheld last November, that they would simply push to have the toll funding of the ferries reinstated by the State Legislature.

I live in Algiers and take the ferries often, but there needs to be a serious plan put into place to make sure they are properly maintained and self-sufficient, even if that means you have to pay a dollar or two to ride across.
