Algiers ferry - huh? (1 Viewer)

i followed this issue pretty closely and voted for the tolls for the ferry and it was only afterwards (when the vote was so close) that i'd found out that that the ferry funded had already been removed well before the vote and the shut down date had already been "announced"
not sure who they announced it to, b/c again i'd been trying to be an informed citizen about this issue

that being said, i've seen the way the state maintains the interstates and highways, and if there's any physical way for a pothole to form on a bridge, i'm sure we'll see that soon enough
:spit:

I have been following the ferry story for awhile and we definitely are missing some key information.

The builder of the new boats says they passed USCG inspection prior to delivery and the current failed inspections are based solely on RTA's crew not being able to demonstrate proper safety/lifesaving training. There are some comments from the local USCG captain of the port that support this position.

However, if that were the case then I would expect the USCG to shut down ALL the ferry boats, not just the new ones. But when the old boats are available for service, the USCG has allowed them to operate - presumably with the same crew that would run the new boats?

Someone is not telling the truth. It is patently absurd for these brand new boats to sit idle for a year without any clear explanation as to why.

Without knowing anything else about it I would tend to blame the RTA because that place is generally crooked AF but we'll see - eventually.

So this morning I go back to the ferry for round two. Right at six the guy comes out and says there are mechanical issues and we have to get on the bus. The bus driver proceeds to inform me that they tell people that ever year, that they don’t want to run it on Monday because it will be running all day Tuesday. I’m going to call them in a bit to see if they expect them back up today.

did get some cool shots of the Cruise ship coming in though

Lived in Algiers for a few years. The first time I told my daughter we were going to ride the ferry across the river to go to the aquarium she thought I meant f-a-i-r-y fairy. I didn't find this out until a few years later. I vividly remember her asking, "where is the ferry?" and being less than enthused when I replied this is it. Had always thought she was a bit scared of the water and the breeze that first time. Turns out she was pretty bummed that we were just taking a boat and not a fairy. All makes sense now. We both had a good laugh when she told me.

man i used to loved biking (with kid wagon) to the ferry to the aquarium, then beignets then home - great mornings
also really miss the ferry on mardi gras - ferry over in full regalia, head to the marigny for the beginning of St Ann's, get under the overpass for zulu, get back for the end of St Ann's and/or Bourbon St awards, then slink back to algiers and go get some popeyes
that was the best

Very similar. Except we would get gator bites at one of the tourist trap restaurants right there on the river before heading back on the ferry.

And this is the type of bullshirt that keeps (kept) me from buying in the point. It's also the type of bullshirt that makes me seriously consider moving to Houston every year. At some point you expect your tax dollars to go beyond "the ice cream machine is broken". Hell, Metairie looks like a beacon of efficiency.

FYI the ferry is back up and running. Wasn’t running at 2 but resumed sometime after that.

My girlfriend was on the last one coming to the WB last night. And this morning they told me it broke last night. So....

and whether the bus driver that told me that they do it every year, actually knew anything or not is kind of beside the point. Nobody trust the city including its employees. I pushed him on it as I was getting off the bus because I wanted to know whether I was going toward the river or the opposite way, toward the bus stop. He clammed you like coach Pete.

They could hand everyone a paddle as they boarded the ferry to help row across the Mississippi and I still would prefer Algiers to Houston. And despite my current career induced exile to this purgatory known as Atlanta, I still pay property taxes in New Orleans so I feel I have room to talk.
