All I Want for Christmas Contest 2024! (1 Viewer)

Day 2, so far, so good.

Any good tips on how to persuade my wife from watching these awful Hallmark or whatever movies with the same plot?

Guy and girl grow up together as good friends, in a sleepy little town where everyone decorates for Christmas, it snows everyday and the Christmas music never stops. One of them moves away for college, they lose touch and go on with their adult lives. Then they end up seeing each other for the first time in years as adults and realize they’ve been in love forever. In the meantime, their current significant others conveniently either cheats on them or dies so so that they can be together. There’s always going to be a coffee shop or bakery involved, a Christmas pageant, play, or parade, and a kiss at the end.

I’m convinced these “movies” are all written by 7th graders. And yes, my wife is a very smart woman with excellent taste in a husband, and terrible taste in movies. :hihi:

For clarification, any part of the song you hear and recognize puts you out? Like if a radio show has a cut in the background as their intro bed, that's enough?

I think there was a ruling that if you only hear the opening note but turn it off before she gets to “for Christmas” - you’re still good. Or if the version you hear goes straight to the piano part, you’re still good to turn it off before the vocal starts.

@Bleu Raeder to confirm

  • The objective of the game is to go as long as possible without hearing Mariah's Christmas classic, "All I Want for Christmas is You".
  • The game starts on December 1st at 6 AM and runs through midnight on December 24th.
  • Only the original version applies. You may enjoy remixes and covers.
  • We are using the honor system: you're out as soon as you hear and recognize the song. Post here to indicate when you're out.

Ded. I heard a tiny snippet last year and was declared ded. Stone ded.

This year I’m not ded yet. I soon will be. It’s only a matter of days til my deth.

This is where it gets tricky. This song has become so damn ubiquitous that most people recognize it within a fraction of a second - even if able to avoid hearing the song for more that a split moment.

Yes I believe your clarification/caveat is correct

I believe your characterization of the clarification is correct.

It is a bit of a grey area because recognition can vary from player to player. Because we're using the honor system, I tend to want to leave each individual to their own. I have been so focused on something that I didn't realize until the first chorus the song was in flight meaning I recognized the song as soon as my conscience-ness coalesced around the tune ~45-60 seconds after it began. In another instance, I was sanding something (hearing protection on). When I stopped the sander and removed the hearing protection it was in the final refrains and my recognition was immediate.

YMMV

Also, if you look it up on Google, snow will fall down the page:

I’ve got the whole family playing this year. TikTok knocked out my daughter and nephew yesterday. She assassinated my brother’s whole family on day one. Wife, kids. She took them all. I think that one was a lovers murder/suicide kinda thing though. Apparently this song is my SIL’s favorite and they’re evangelicals so now they can listen to the Mariahnator in their blissful afterlife.

I’m still good. Even made it in and out of Walmart a few times while my SO took advantage of a new iPhone deal they had.

Pro tip: waiting outside of a store to avoid her isn’t great when the store has outside speakers.
