As Brock Purdy advances, I wonder if Trey Lance will be available (1 Viewer)

Next season there will be an open competition between Purdy and Lance. Purdy needs to have success for two seasons before the 49ers can feel comfortable that he is their future quarterback. Lance has tremendous athletic talent, and the general manager and head coach made a huge wager with their trade-up that Lance could be not just a quarterback you can win with, but a quarterback you win because of.

We had been through it once. We don't want the next Heath Shuler.

It’s Kyle Shanahan’s system. When three different QBs excel in your Offense with little drop off between them it’s clear it’s mostly the system. Overpaying for a system QB without bringing the system in too is a recipe for misery. I never saw anything in Lance that made me think he’d succeed without Shanahan.

You think someone would give a first? I can't see anything higher than a 3.
I could see Lance going for a package of ‘23 3rd and conditional ‘24 3rd that can become a 2nd. 49ers won’t get an immediate high round pick because of how little he’s produced/played. But they can get a package of multiple mid round picks for Lance.

If Purdy goes all the way to the NFCCG and SB, it’s really no point in keeping Lance just to be entrenched QB2 unless they don’t have confidence Purdy can maintain success in year 2 with film on him.

I wouldn't mind the Saints spending a seconder rounder and 24 draft pick on Trey Lance. It's a reasonable risk for a player that might have a high yield. If doesn't work team isn't crippled by a bad contract or losing high end draft capital.
We don’t have a second in 2024

Fields is astronomically better than Lance. That does not necessarily relate to your comment, though.

49’s would be crazy to let him go. This will help keep their salary cap down for a few years to pay other players now.

I don’t think they’ll sell low on Lance. But if they do I’m interested.

Then they’d be betting against themselves, or hedging against an injury at the very least because Lances stock doesn’t get any higher until he sees significant playing time and turns the corner more.

That’s right. Whatever they get now isn’t going to be worth the backlash if purdy stinks or gets hurt next year and Lance lights it up after being sold for pennies on the dollar. You have to have another quarterback anyway and you aren’t going to get one cheaper than Lance’s contract.
