Bobby Hebert: The Next Few Games Will Determine Jameis Winston's Future And His Future Pay (3 Viewers)

In all honesty, Winston seemingly is more willing to scramble and run for positive yards, where as Carr keeps his eyes downfield. Neither guy seems to be able to "feel" the rush quite as well as Drew Brees did, but both are significantly better at it than Dalton.

I think Carr is better if we have an actual O-line, but Winston's ability (and willingness) to tuck the ball and run up the middle for positive yards when the pass protection breaks down gives us a different dimension to the offense than we have had so far this season.

I'm hopeful Winston plays well, saves our season, and his career, and Carr comes back to an offensive line finally gelling.

I'm afraid this oline is gonna break Winston too.
Unfortunately Winston doesn't look for the check down and doesn't handle pressure well. To think Winston will somehow get better in these 2 areas because of 1 week of practice is fool hearty.
Best thing we can do is protect Jamies with play calling.
So he'll likely be injured too after Sunday

I've started to wonder--if we can't run block and can't pass protect, what makes us think these guys are going to start excelling while blocking in space for a screen?
they block well for a screen, the dline get penetration and the oline is at second level without moving lol

Carr has had the same problem this year. On the other hand, Dalton's fault (among others) is that he progressed to the check down too quickly. Seeing how this line is playing, I can better understand his thought process.

Both QB1 and QB2 need to take what's there, Winston was getting the ball out on time on that last drive but execution on the routes by other receivers led to the long FG try.

Yeah...our O line is magically not be the problem next week.

Case in point:
Tragic case of when you are in too deep...lol. I honestly would like to know what good O-line he played behind because when he left, the Bucs did something they never did his entire time there; drafted an O-lineman in the 1st round...lol. He then gets to start here and an O-lineman seemingly gets injured every 3 games. Then get's his back broke behind an O-line where he got the blame for their performance. These are things you can't make up.

JW has had some of his best games as a Saint, behind this oline in previous seasons, is to get yardage with his legs when it breaks down

he had a chance last week and didnt do so

not saying that will be what will win games throughout the season but in the role as backup to get wins while starter is out he may need to do so

im not really familiar with Carr's game as i only watch the Saints but that maybe, with the issues we are having, may make JW more successful than Carr

though if AK can bring the screen game into the offense that would help alot
You bring up good points. Casual onlookers don't realize how many first downs he got with his feet in 2021 and these weren't designed runs. This should have let people know then and there that we had an O-line problem. Just pulled some quick dirty numbers and in 14 games (240 attempts), Kamara rushed for 42 1st downs; 12 games (70 attempts), Taysom rushed for 26 1st downs; 7 games (32 attempts), Winston rushed for 17 1st downs.

Wow, a real Captain Obvious takes Bobby. Ya think.....?
Obvious? Somewhat...Baker Mayfield led teams went 2-8 last season, with him completing 60% of his passes, throwing 10TD-8INT with a 79 passer rating and this season got signed to a team with a legitimate opportunity to start. Some things just work differently for others.

He was running for his life last year also. It was said he couldn't see the field--of course he couldn't with a free (unblocked) rusher coming at him, which happened six times in the first three games.

I hear ya...but dudes been hesitant as hell to run since the injury

They haven't been able to...I remember one play from game 1 where 2 linemen got out front and a DB split the blocks and made the tackle for a short gain

Don't know where else to put this, but looking at pressure to sack ratio, Winston was seventh worst last year (26.2%) while Carr is third worst this year (31.4%). The only thing separating them is that WInston had three scrambles and Carr has one, if you swap their scramble totals you end up more or less swapping their pressure to sack ratio.

This line was bad last year, Dalton just figured out that he should get it out ASAP so he could avoid suffering the same fate as Winston.

yes in limited play it does seem so . if he still has the yips due to injury thats going to hurt him across the board as standing in the pocket as it in now wont prevent chance of injury

I think Winston is walking into a situation that's not quite like the times before. He has a budding superstar in Olave, a returning superstar in MT and Rasheed the Speed. Couple that with a fresh AK and I think he'll have his best opportunity for redemption and it will be at home vs is former team.

We've essentially had the same offensive line the entire time he's been here and he's had success behind it before. Let's just hope he isn't afraid to run when he has to... Defensive front 7 haven't been concerned with contain and that's a problem
