Brandon Staley is Defensive Coordinator

Well a lot of people here were hoping for a 3-4 now we have it. Let’s hope Staley can get the personnel signed for the change. Next year the Saints are going to be entirely different on both sides of the ball.

It's going to be interesting learning about 0 Tech NTs, 1 1/2 gapping, pattern matching, matchup zone, and 2 high shell. I had little idea what most of those meant a few weeks ago. I'm excited to learn about it.

How do we know he is running a 3-4? he plays multiple fronts.

I do agree that getting personnel is the next step for this team and that is always a fun process on SR.com, lets go shopping!

My guess is he’ll move Bresee to DE, they’ll need to sign/draft a couple more LBs (boy Baun and Elliss would come in handy now), and get a big NT. It’ll be an interesting transition because the Saints have run a 4-3 so long.

its a base 3-4 tithe (not sure i spelled it correct but the DE's and NT are squinched between the OT's) with usually 2 high and commonly a cover 3. Think back to when the Seattle defense was super awesome. Same concept but 3-4 based with the DE's and NT crowding the middle to force runs outside.

I 100% welcome a new look & philosophy on D. Cant wait to see how we address our EDGE position this offseason. Staley’s 34 scheme will call for a pretty major overhaul at the position. Lucky for us, this year is absolutely LOADED w/34 EDGE/Rush OLBs. Mike Green, Donavon Ezeiruaku, James Pearce Jr., Princely Umanielen, David Walker, & Josaiah Stewart & though im not a fan of the 2 GA OLB/EDGEs, they all seem to fit Staley’s EDGE profile. Havent been this excited for a draft in while.

We do not know what kind of defense he is going to run.

He would be a great draft pick in the later rounds, if the 3-4 is our new scheme.

He tends to run a base 3-4 but he does run a lot of 4-3 fronts. Sometimes those 4-3 fronts have 3 down linemen and one stand up edge rusher in what would normally be a DE position with his hand on the ground in a normal 4-3. He's certainly a multiple fronts guy that will use different things to attack different offenses.

For instance, Fangio, who is Staley's mentor, more or less ran a 5 man front against us when we played the Eagles this year to shut down our run game.

I think this could give new life to Mathieu. He's still very smart and should still be good at crashing down on the LoS to add a run stopper to the light box that Staley tends to use. But, we will need to add some good young Safeties soon.
