Brandon Staley is Defensive Coordinator (1 Viewer)

Staley will need a generational talent to build around the defense.

His Los Angeles Chargers defense was rather unimpressive and borderline bad in clutch situation.

Very lukewarm. He had one legit amazing year and they was one Aaron Donald pressure away from blowing a Superbowl lead in the clutch.

My guess is he’ll move Bresee to DE, they’ll need to sign/draft a couple more LBs (boy Baun and Elliss would come in handy now), and get a big NT. It’ll be an interesting transition because the Saints have run a 4-3 so long.

Agreed. Going to take some time to get what we need. I wonder what he will do with Cam? I've always thought that he would be a good DE in a 3-4 and at his age it might work great. Plus, I think Cam is smart enough to 1 1/2 gap as a DE. He's always been great against the run and I think he's still good against the run even at his age. He's not the edge rusher he was but he should be able to give you plenty snaps as a 3-4 DE. I don't see him being able to make the switch to a 3-4 OLB.

He tends to run a base 3-4 but he does run a lot of 4-3 fronts. Sometimes those 4-3 fronts have 3 down linemen and one stand up edge rusher in what would normally be a DE position with his hand on the ground in a normal 4-3. He's certainly a multiple fronts guy that will use different things to attack different offenses.

For instance, Fangio, who is Staley's mentor, more or less ran a 5 man front against us when we played the Eagles this year to shut down our run game.

I think this could give new life to Mathieu. He's still very smart and should still be good at crashing down on the LoS to add a run stopper to the light box that Staley tends to use. But, we will need to add some good young Safeties soon.

those aren't 4-3 fronts, those are 3-4 under and the 5 man on the line that Fangio did was a 3-4 odd alignment.

It’s a lot more likely he would be an OLB in a 2-4-5 front. The 3-4 is going to be the exception, DC’s want seven guys back in a passing league (versus five guys on the LOS).

We do not know what kind of defense is is going to run.
Moore has said repeatedly that he creates a system that bets fits his players. He's said that every player has a super power and it's the coaches job to figure out how to use that super power.

I'd be really surprised if Moore hired a DC that doesn't share that philosophy and approach on the defensive side of the ball. I think Staley's going to run whatever defense best fits the current roster. That might be a 3-4, but it might not be.

Maybe. No doubt we won't see much base 3-4 given that it's a passing league, Nickel is practically a team's base. I know Staley ran some 2-4-5 Nickle but he also used some 3-3-5 Nickel.

Anyway, I'm just not sure Cam has the speed or agility to play in space at this point in his career and I think he would be better used as a run stopper now rather than as an edge rusher. So I see him more as a downlineman in the 2-4-5 or a DE in the 3-3-5 Nickel. Although in the long run Cam isn't going to be the cornerstone of the defense anymore and likely won't be here longer than another year.

We will likely do that on both sides of the ball in the short term, that is unless Staley thinks he has the players to run an odd front, and I think he does, but in the long run both Staley and Moore will have a specific scheme that they want to run and draft/sign players that fit the schemes they want to run. But, we likely won't see exactly what those schemes until the 2nd year at the earliest.

But regardless of what front Staley runs, he's still going to be running his 1 1/2 gap scheme with a light box and using a lot of 2 high shell and matchup zone for the DBs.

Welcome to "Who Dat Nation" Brandon Stanley! Looking forward to a fresh new and innovative take on attacking enemy offenses.

Moore strikes me as the type that will have a goal, but will adapt to the players he can get through the draft and free agency instead of pressing for certain players. When you start trying to get certain types, you start reaching for players.

Only if he has players that can do that well. If not, then he'll probably do what his players are best at instead.

Yup
Bresee and Cam are your DE’s backed up by Shep and Tanoh
Saunders is your NT backed up by Ridgeway
Chase, Granderson and Foskey at OLB, this is where we will need to add someone.
