BS penalty. Int. grounding on Jameis. (2 Viewers)

BEcause bet your you know what if Landry would've gotten up and housed it, they would've called it down by contact at the point of catch
No, they would’ve called it out of bounds. Because he rolled out of bounds. Not everything is a conspiracy.

I would have thought they would review if he was indeed out of bounds or down by contact. I'm guessing they couldn't because the spiked ball happened before they could decide to review it (since you can't review a play after another one has been ran). From the limited looks I saw, he appeared down by contact and the clock should have been running. It was very close. I think Winston panicked a little and maybe the coaching staff too. They were standing right by the play and should have seen the ref signal to stop the clock. I do agree that the refs were rushing to spot the ball like the clock was running, but they probably do that regardless of the clock incase the team wants to go hurry up. For sure the second spike was WAY too early. We escaped with a win and hopefully will grow from this experience.

They call that on the SAINTS, but no penalty when the Falcons coach runs out to mid field to fuss at the refs and argue to reverse a call
Yep, he did it the WHOLE game!!!!

After being touched on the way down
That may or may not have been the case. I haven’t seen a close enough replay to determine if he was touched. But he definitely rolled out of bounds, so it wouldn’t matter if he took it to the house after.

He was...that's why Landry got up and ran back to the line. If the clock was indeed stopped the off crew did a sheetty job of communicating that to us, because they quick spotted the ball as if the clock was running as well.

I don't think there is any precedent for spiking the ball to be intentional grounding, even though the clock was stopped. There is precedent for grounding if you delay spiking (I.e. you're trying to force the defense to do something instead of immediately spiking the ball). However, the rule is designed around the idea that you are trying to avoid being hit by a defender and it's clear Jameis was not in danger of being hit in that situation. If I were a member of the Saints, I would ask the NFL for an official ruling on this because they might have goofed this up. It's "penalty" enough to lose the down from a wasted spike. Ultimately, it was bad situational awareness by our coaches and QB that this happened, though.

I will also say that I think we showed poor situational football awareness to spike the ball on 3rd and 4, too. We had enough time to run a real play against the sidelines to possibly get some more yards or to at least waste more clock before the field goal attempt. The combination of these two errors on the final drive really needs to get cleaned up.

Anyone can explain to me why Winston spike the ball on 3rd down when he had 20 plus second to run a quick play?

I’m simply commenting on the idea that if he had run it to the house the officials would’ve then called him down by contact. I’m saying he was also out of bounds. My original post was clear. What are you arguing with me about?

It wasn’t clear that Landry was down by contact and then he rolled out of bounds. Winston should’ve checked whether the clock was running. Still, I didn’t know that a QB couldn’t spike it when the clock wasn’t running. Winston did mess up by spiking it in 3rd and short with almost 30 seconds left. That one made me more angry. Not only could we have allowed the clock to run if we had decided to kick a field goal, but also we might’ve been able to get a first down. I can only imagine that Winston thought it was 2nd down. He needs to be told to look at the scoreboard to check for running time and down and distance. He should know this, but apparently not.
Correct me if I'm wrong here. Once you snap the ball, the clock runs, correct? So, even if the clock was stopped beforehand, once the ball is snapped, the clock runs, you can spike the ball. What am I not seeing here? Other than another bad call by the refs?

Yep, even if the clock has stopped, when the ball is snapped, the clock starts again, so it's running, you can spike the ball. Total BS call on the refs, just one of quite a few questionable decisions they made in that game.
In order for Winston to spike the ball, the ref had to spot it and turn possession over to the center. It was their job to tell the center and Jameis at that time that the clock was stopped.

That isn’t favoring the Saints, that’s telling the player what the ruling on the field is, which the refs are REQUIRED to do.
