BS penalty. Int. grounding on Jameis. (1 Viewer)

Yea, none of these explanations explains the fact that spiking a ball that is snapped IS stopping a moving clock. Even if the clock is stopped pre-snap, snapping the ball starts the clock. Thus, you're still spiking a moving clock.
From that Mahomes article it seems there is a specific rule that says if the clock is NOT running prior to the snap of the football then a spiked football a spike results in the penalty.

I kind of think you're overcomplicating it from there because conceptually that seems pretty simple to me. If it's a situation such as this one where it makes no sense to spike the football, it results in penalty. You get penalized for being stupid enough to do something you shouldn't do, essentially.

There's another wrinkle to this, though. Intentional grounding usually requires there not be a receiver in the area. When the ball is snapped, the tight end is clearly in the area, so an eligible receiver is in the area. If it's not a spike, it's an incomplete pass, which would also stop the clock. It's not unlike throwing the ball in the dirt on those failed screens we do all the time.

It's not a delayed spike. It's not spiking a stopped clock (because the clock moves when you snap the ball). It might be a legitimate incomplete pass. There's nothing explicit in the rule book that defines this as intentional grounding that I've seen thus far.
It was definitely a mental lapse on the part of Winston and the coaching. For whatever reason, they did not realize the previous play was out of bounds, the clock was stopped and was not going to start until the ball is snapped. I was even yelling at the TV. Why did they spike it!

As far as the IG all, far be it for me to defend the officials, but I do think it was the right call. You're only allowed to do that when the clock is running inside 2 minutes.

Lol if it was Brees are we grilling him like this?? This is joke on Jameis. Refs are at fault here. They needed to make it clear because it was unclear what the call on the field was.
I’m a JW fan but DB would not have done the second spike. The man was always aware. This was a learning opportunity for JW.

You realize they snapped the ball, right?
The clock has to be running prior too the snap for the spike to be legal. It wasn't a running clock. You realize it was a bone head play right? There was no need to spike it. They could have huddled up and run a play.

And that's fine...a spiked ball after a stopped clock is a penalty, all that does really is highlight that the officials did a piss poor job communicating that the clock was stopped.

I agree, especially with the way they seemed to rush up there to spot the football as if the clock was indeed running.

That's the problem with your argument. It wasn't a moving clock. It was really a boneheaded play by the Saints. They should have known the officials ruled Landry out and the clock was stopped. They could have huddled and run another play.

It was the correct call actually, just a poor explanation by the ref. You're not allowed to spike it like that unless the clock is running. Clock was stopped due to out of bounds and it wasn't going to start again until ball was snapped. Mental lapse by Winston and the coaching staff.
So technically, you would have to use the old kill the clock play, where the QB gets the snap and immediately throws to the sideline, 8 ft over the wide out’s head?

Why? THE CLOCK WAS STOPPED. You didn't need to run a kill the clock play. This was a bit of a blunder by DA and the OC. And Winston as well.

That’s what I’m getting at. So far, no one has been able to show this explanation on the rule book.
IDK but I van see how it could be ruled IG. Saints coaching should have been aware of this and not have Winston spike it when it was completely unnecessary. I mean you have to be aware of that. I'm faulting DA more than the officials on that.

As has already been noted. It seems that JW, Carmichael, and Allen all thought the clock was going to start, since the officials were running full speed to set the ball and move move the chains, like Landry was inbounds.

I think the headset was off since it was 2mins warning. Jameis was on his own.

Never ever heard of such a rule. I still cannot figure out the call and what the ruling was.

Is it the Saints fault the clock wasn’t running? Why would the official spot the ball and not start the clock? Why would the officials allow the Saints to even snap the ball?

I DON’T GET IT!

Anybody?
I didn’t hear the call, but that one really confused me.
