[Bumped to discuss resulting legal actions] Elementary school shooting in Connecticut. (Edit/Update - 26 reported killed, many of them children) (2 Viewers)

They keep saying, “all he did was speak words, he didn’t pull the trigger.” And citing freedom of speech. What about yelling fire in a crowded theater? Or bomb in an airport terminal? They are just words.

Defamation. In this case in the form of slander, is not protected speech.

End of story.

They would like to see the line on libel and slander blurried im sure. There has been an awful lot of falsehoods vocalized from prominient politicians in recent years, it is "in vogue" in certain circles it seems... and im sure at least some of it would qualify as defamation.

I also thought the reasoning was something like the very nature of the crime and coverage made the parents public figures and the rules are different for public figures than private citizens

That seems vaguely familiar to me

Here’s a pretty good piece on how that issue applies here - the concept is “limited public figure” and it’s now always clear.

And the dumbest thing of all is that he got defaulted for refusing to participate under the rules. How forking arrogant and stupid do you have to be - he’s got to be one of the most arrogantly stupid, self-defeating people in modern history. Just wildly idiotic.

I just hope that karma comes to him as it appears it will….if he offed himself the world would be a better place…and it takes a special kind of monster to make me feel that way…..

NEW YORK (AP) — A Connecticut jury’s ruling this week ordering Alex Jones to pay $965 million to parents of Sandy Hook shooting victims he maligned was heartening for people disgusted by the muck of disinformation.

Just don’t expect it to make conspiracy theories go away.

The appetite for such hokum and narrowness of the judgments against Jones, who falsely claimed that the 2012 elementary school shootings were a hoax and that grieving parents were actors, virtually ensure a ready supply, experts say.

“It’s easy to revel in Alex Jones being punished,” said Rebecca Adelman, a communications professor at the University of Maryland. “But there’s a certain shortsightedness in that celebration.”

There’s a deep tradition of conspiracy theories across American history, from people not believing the official explanation of John F. Kennedy’s assassination to various accusations of extraterrestrial-visit coverups to unfounded allegations of the 2020 presidential election being rigged. With the Salem witch trials in 1692, they even predated the country’s formation.

What’s different today? The internet allows such stories to spread rapidly and widely — and helps adherents find communities of the likeminded.

That in turn can push such untrue theories into mainstream politics. Now the will to spread false narratives skillfully online has spread to governments, and the technology to doctor photos and videos enables purveyors to make disinformation more believable……

If people believe the Earth is flat and that space is fake, they will believe anything.

I wonder if he believes his own BS? Tell a lie often enough, and to the teller, it becomes truth. Not that it excuses him in any way. I wish Alex Jones nothing but woe.

I tend to think he doesn’t and he is just a straight up grifter….but who knows….a choice between an insane idiot or a shameless grifter leads me to the same conclusion…..

He's just like most of the conspiracy theorists on YT, like the flat earthers. The ones that have actual channels that promote flat earth make money off of their videos, but you get the impression that they don't believe it, they just like the money. They will put out more and more stupid videos for their followers and the more outrageous the better. Then the followers send them money to keep "bringing them the truth".
