Payton: "Ok Mickey - go and find defense in FA. After a year out of football you'd better believe I'm drafting Offense in the first round, son."

Mickey - *goes off to look for change in a couch*

Good signing, he will definitely push for a starting role. We still have zero depth at OLB though. I see Tez as being serviceable on the outside but could be an animal on the inside so I guess we could count him as OLB depth.

3 Things:

1) This kid is like the Cowboy's Junior Galette. Super productive in limited minutes, grades out positively, but never got the snaps to show what he can do. I love his potential. Cheap contract too is a big plus.

2) This gives us serious flexibility going into the draft. I have a hunch that SP recognizes our problems drafting defense and our proficiency for offense, so I think he is taking the approach of signing defenders in FA and drafting offensive guys.

3) Butler allows to play Tez at his more natural ILB position, and I think we groom him under Vilma for a year. He is a great blitzer of the A gap, and Ryan loves to blitz his WILB (which I think is a great fit for TEZ). Really, though, I think Tez is going to play all 4 LB positions (along with Hawthorne as well). It gives us great flexibility going forward.

I really hope this is the case, the more RR is allowed to move his LBs around, the better he can disguise his blitzes.

100 % agree with all of this.

Love the signing, but i hope the team still drafts a pass rusher. Butler, in my opinion, is depth. Though i see his potential, im not 100% sold on him being a starter. Hope we're not thinking he's the answer to our pass rush woes. Nice pick up though.
