Calls for an "immediate impact" at CB through the draft. Do they make sense? (1 Viewer)

You can't waste the 10th overall pick on someone who will sit the bench.

To me that's wasting the pick. Settle for the best CB avaiable in the second round if that's the case.

Rivers isn't going to start from day one if hes the pick either. Beating out a probowler in Dan Morgan and the current starter in Shanle will be a tough order for a rookie. So do you now not want him? You pick the player who will have the best career, not the best rookie year.

This thread shows why we should trade up and get Ellis or Dorsey whoever falls out of the top 5.

We have young corners to develop and we can pick up another one in the 2nd or 5th round but we need youth and quality at the DT position desparately.

Has Dan Morgan proved that he can come back from an injury...much less play the entire season....NO.

And just for the record.....I support trading up for a DT first and foremost....if that can't happen...I want Rivers at 10.....and BPA at CB in the second.

Building a team with BPA instead of stretching for Needs is ALWAYS the recipe for success in the NFL. You end up getting stars that way and over time you end up with a team full of stars and a powerhouse of a team. Look at the Chargers.

That doesn't matter. Dan Morgan may get hurt during the season. But he will win the starting job in TC and preseason so Rivers will not start from day 1. And since you think the player at 10 must start from day 1, he wouldn't fit your requirements.

Noones saying they are complete bums and noones saying a CB we pick will be one either. But with our depth at CB currently, a rookie is going to struggle to win a starting job as a nickel or dime back, much less beating out David and Gay for the 2nd CB's spot in TC. The whole point was to swing for the fences if we pick a CB and get the guy with the highest ceiling. We aren't in desperate need for a CB to come in and start from day one so we can afford to go BPA if we pick CB (or any position for that matter).

depth is one thing , starters are the others.sure we have two starters even without mckenzie , just why there have to start two guys. iam not a downer , but young showed me not much last year to believe he can step up and play 6 games as a starter until MM returns. david should be atleast better than last year after one year of man coverage under his belt, that leaves craft and gay . gay is more of good nickel with starting experience , craft last year showed that he is extremely prone in coverage , speed doesnt do the whole work . he has the same weaknesses as david right now. so in my opinion we can speak of depth when we are sure about our both starters. maybe if we create some kind of passrush next season it turns out to be a good corps , but independet from it we failed to add young talent the last 5-6 drafts. other teams are loaded with young solid nickels and dimes or future starters, while our backups most times were just old journeymen or failed starters.
lets say we will have a better passdefense next year , still i would be upset if we dont add new talent to help the group for the next years. i want to see a concept in rebuilding the defense anytime soon , the patchworking in FA to pick BPA doesnt work really good in my opinion.

Who said they couldn't contribute? I'm saying that we have the depth to take the CB with the most potential even if he is more raw then say Cason or Talib. Leon Hall was horrible for the Bengals and Aaron Ross was a nickelback. I'm not sure about Revis's situation. Antoine Cromartie is exactly what I'm saying. Freak athlete, great potential, didn't play his rookie year (was injured), but is a beast now. Do you think the Chargers care that he didn't play his rookie year now? Of course not.

.

agreed on that ! but i dont see THIS much success in educating a DRC for us. gimme mike jenkins and he can start if gay or david suck

Honestly I can't bank on Morgan making it through the pre-season....

Then we would be back to where we were last year......weak at outside linebacker.

I don't think a CB should go in the top ten....All of them grade out close enough to wear they would be a good pick from 15-40. Not top 10.

The cornerback you draft at 40 has just as good of a chance as the one you draft at 10....so why waste #10 on a CB?

Ryan Clady would come in and win over the RT spot.

Even if Morgan is hurt, I don't think Rivers could beat out Shanle.

Ever heard a coach say that it STARTS UP FRONT?

Getting good quality players to make up your front 7 on defense is the key to a good secondary...

Having the best corners and a weak front seven is not the right combination.....Build from the D-line out...and that will put you on the right track to getting a better defense.

Keep in mind that this wasn't a discussion of whether we should take a CB. I personally want an OT or OG at 10 over a LB or CB. This was more to those who are set on taking a CB at 10.

I'm a fan of drafting STARTERS in the first round.
But hey, maybe we'll draft like last year and have 0 impact
on the first day. There's always next year.
