Calls for an "immediate impact" at CB through the draft. Do they make sense? (1 Viewer)

they get paid too much dang money to sit imo.

We have a top 10 pick so I would say we have holes to fill.

I'm not even going to compare our Saints to any team out there.

We have a total of 2 playoff wins. 7-9 = holes to fill.

The Steelers drafted Polamalu and he started (5 rings)

I'm talking about current situations with rosters, not just saying good teams don't start rookies. I was using that as an example because better teams usually don't have a ton of holes to fill. We don't either so its going to be hard for a rookie to come in and start at most positions on this team.

What defense were you watching last year?

We have holes the size of canyons on defense. But you want to draft a "potential" bench sitter with our first choice.

What gives?

We filled those holes with Vilma, McCray, Morgan, and Gay. That along with resigning everyone else for depth. We filled the holes. Whether or not those guys live up to their past production is another story. We have rock solid depth at most positions. While some of our starters are not the best in the league, we do not have a major hole at any position at this time. Maybe the TE position but that's an opinion.

Unless we got Ellis or Dorsey theres not room for a rookie to come in and start unless they just have an unbelievable TC. The one exception is safety, but what safety are we going to take at 10? We pretty much filled all our holes on defense.

Ok...I agree we did fill holes on the defense.....but not 100%.

Both Vilma and Morgan are coming off injury....and we took low risk high reward chances on these players.

If both were 100%.....I'd probably change my Rivers pick.

But the fact is, their not 100% and I don't want to take that chance.

All makes sense but MM is a big question mark for me.

MM has been seen carousing Harrah's w Adrian Peterson and also shooting a few baskets at a charity BASKETBALL tourney 2 weeks ago. I think he's going to be ready for Week 1. That's one hardcore dude.

I think Vilma will solidify the mike position but Morgan is probably not going to make it through the season, McCray is going to be a backup at end and Gay was a nickel back at not one of the best in the league. I know he has started some games but he has not shown he is a shutdown corner by any means. This is turning into Simmons, David, Kaesviharn draft offense all over again. Just because we bring in a body in a position does not mean problem solved. I hope every one of these guys ends up being a pro bowler but safe money says they wont. We need to draft D, we have loaded up on young offensive lineman, 2 running backs, 2 recievers, and a backup qb in the draft and ufas over the past couple of years. We have gotten 1 LB, 1 corner, 1 safety and maybe a DT or an end I cant remember still on the team from the last 2 years draft. Offense has done fine the defense needs help

All the players we brought in this season on defense is 10 times better than the players we brought in last season. The comparison is not a good one. The only legitimate question mark is their health. CB will be addressed in the draft. Which round will they look for one will be the key. This is a very deep draft for CB and RB. Both are positions that the saints should be looking for and I expect them to come out of the draft with them. DT is what we're aiming for so we're hoping for defense but anything can change on draft day.

This is right on point. We can have contingency plans, but can we really use the 10th pick to get a guy just in case someone (Morgan) gets injured when we already have Shanle? This to me says no to Rivers. How many dang LB's do we want?

Same logic applies to the secondary. MM, Gay, David, and Young are here to stay. That leaves one spot. I'm all for getting a guy, but a day one rookie starter? C'mon. There isn't a guy in this draft who can come close. Remember where all the Super Bowl rings on our team are. Jason David and Randall Gay. If JD can play #2 corner and RG can pay nickel on Super Bowl winning teams, that means they are servicable and can be compensated for in the right schemes and situations.

I think this pick comes down to how highly the FO thinks of Zach Strief. If they think he can beat out Stinch, we go with Albert. If they don't, we probably go with Clady. Then you can get Molden in the 3rd and have 2 young athletic corners on the team and one of them would eventually step up and take a starting job. With the rest of the picks (and next years for that matter) you can get all the DT's and LB's and Safeties you want. This is of course assuming we stay at the #10 pick.

We cannot be worse at CB than we were last year. I would be up for drafting a CB at 10 if we can't trade, and plugging him in opposite MM.

The risk is not making a switch.

I'm all for drafting a corner but he would have to be exceptional to start and I just don't see any that are ready. If we are counting on starting our draft pick, it's going to be a long year. You only thought David was bad! What impact would it have on a young player to throw him in to that situation? I know everyone has to start somewhere but that could do more harm than good for the player and the team in the short and long term.

Honestly I can't bank on Morgan making it through the pre-season....

Then we would be back to where we were last year......weak at outside linebacker.

I don't think a CB should go in the top ten....All of them grade out close enough to wear they would be a good pick from 15-40. Not top 10.

The cornerback you draft at 40 has just as good of a chance as the one you draft at 10....so why waste #10 on a CB?

:plus-un2:

Even if Morgan is hurt, I don't think Rivers could beat out Shanle.

Are you serious? I hope you are joking or something. That's a ridiculous statement.

2006 - Tye Hill started 10 games for the Rams and Antonio Cromartie, in his 2nd year, is one of the top CB's in the league. Jonathan Joseph for the Bengals started 9 games as a rookie.
2007 - Revis for the Jets, Leon Hall for the Bengals, and Aaron Ross for the Giants all started and contributed last season to their teams.
I do agree that adding Gay, Young, and David in the last 2 off seasons has made a roster spot at that position hard to secure, but I don't think it's a lock to say a rookie could not contribute to our Defense.

Specifically, Hall contributed the most TD's given up in the league, I think, even surpassing Jason David.
