I'm tired of seeing other teams with tackling machines that get 130, 140, and even 150 tackles per season. You can not predict who they will be by their measurables, coaches have to be able to notice their skills and give them a shot. We have been pretty poor at that for the past 15 years, I hope we get better.

Dude lives in the backfield. If Joe Vitt can get him some quality coaching at the next level I can see him being a difference maker for us in a year or two.

I'm more excited about the potential of Rufus Johnson...

Me too actually. I think Rufus Porter when I hear the name Rufus, but that's neither here nor there. I think of Rufus and imagine him coming in and blowing people away. As is being posted here, competition means nothing, but Johnson really looked like a man among boys out there. I hope he pulls a Michael Strahan, coming from middle of nowhere Texas, and being the crown jewel of our defense.

Yet he wasnt drafted. What are we seeing that NFL franchises didn't see in 230+ chances?

Arian Foster wasn't drafted. That means coaches don't have talent evaluation skills or are too lazy to do their homework on players. Someone with Thomases body of work deserves to be looked at very closely, and given a chance. He probably won't get it, so we'll never know.

Barf.. Our linebacker play the last 4-5 years wasn't evidence enough to you that Joe Vitt is not a very good LB coach?

We can only hope that Payton uses Vitt to come up with catchphrases, and lets Rob Ryan find someone to coach his LBs

Another thing that hasn't been discussed. Chase is coming here with a big advantage, nobody in the current roster has played more downs on the 3-4 scheme then Thomas. Yes, not even Victor Butler.

Chase was used all around in Stanford's defense, he was aligned as a pure edge rusher, coming also from the middle and even thrown back to cover tight ends and receivers on the slot.

He is not the most athletic linebacker we have, but we got a solid football player.

I think he will open the eyes of our coaches with hard work, intelligence and leadership, allowing him to contribute on special teams from day 1.

After that, it is all competition. I am not predicting that he will be a star or even a starter, but I can see him as a solid contributor in the rotation for years to come.
