Chase Thomas UDFA [MERGED] (1 Viewer)

I love how people think the Saints are some kind of genius for getting this guy to sign with them. Didn't the Saints pass on this guy like all the rest of the NFL?

No one is saying that Chase Thomas can't make it in the NFL b/c he was a UDFA. But I'd temper down the expectations. He has a long road ahead of him just to make the roster...

Exactly, totally agree TCU. But as others have said... these vets better show up to camp READY to play, because some of this year's crop of UDFA's are going to GRIND from day one. I see Thomas and Reddick being a thorn in the vet's side all camp. Love it.

How many more times are you going to say this?

Obviously somebody is looking at them (and somebody in NFL front offices at that) because outside of his play what else would prevent him from being drafted.

To the guy that asked if I was interested in Jarvis Jones (yet he and Chase ran the same 40). Yes I did want Jones, and I am not even an SEC fan. But the difference in competition the two faced was night and day.

I also think Jones wasn't the center of attention for SEC teams, whereas Chase was the best player on the Stanford team. I didn't want Jones at the 15th spot because of the athleticism questions, among others, but I would've been tickled to get him at the end of the 1st round, since he was so productive. However getting a player with great production as an UDFA is fantastic. If Jones' measurables don't prevent him from succeeding, as many believe, including Pittsburg, then I think Chase's measureables won't prevent him from succeeding either. The competition he faced is a legitimate question, but I think since teams may have game-planned for Chase, that may have made his production equally difficult to a player such as Jones.

Chase Thomas

This guy is a stud, just watch the tape vs ND. Can't believe we got him as a UDFA.
But my question is: Does anybody know or quite understand why he dropped so tremendously in the draft?

Not crazy athletic, more of "try hard" type of player that relies on instincts and technique. Still woulda thought he would go in the 3rd or 4th....who knows. Maybe we overrated him.

If you're making me have to say something (which is really hard to do because I love the guy and I think he was the biggest UDFA acquisition in the league) I think it's that he has a ceiling on his athleticism and that he's not a particularly good speed rusher. He lacks that "first move" quickness. I also think his Combine scared people off.

That said, he's JUST what the Saints need in a hardcore fundamental tackler.

Hes Slow.....AND white.

I'm not saying that to be funny but Its the only thing i can think of. His pro day results were better than Jarvis Jones proday. His production was just as good...especially considering that he played on the strong side compared to Jarvis playing weakside OLB. If Thomas would have been a weakside OLB he could have put up similar number to jones.

Then they both would have had the same questions......athleticism vs production. I honestly don't get it. I mean if you compare the two then Jones did it against SEC competition but i mean Jones has medical/character/weight room concerns. While Thomas had none of those.

Shrugs..beat me. So that brings me back to He's slow and white which is stupid.

because his exceptional play at the collegiate level doesn't quite translate to the NFL level, as indicated by 32 NFL teams passing him up for 7 rounds of the draft

in much the same way a high school player dominates but can't do much of anything at the collegiate level (see Al Woods, Russell Shepard, etc)

The people predicting the draft simply got it wrong with this guy and now it appears to everyone that he was overlooked

not really that hard to understand

I think a scout said it best. Chase Thomas going UD was due to teams trying to hit homeruns late in the draft oppose to finding a guy who will make your roster for 10 years
