Comic Con Talk (Renamed since LA Comic Con can't get it together) (4 Viewers)

I'll do so tomorrow.

There's maybe two more sections as such and they go from one wall of the hall to almost the other. I ran out of time going through boxes and getting signatures. JR Jr. was right next to me walking in and I really wanted to tell him how much his art sucks these days. But I'm a professional (plus I'm going to try to get press credentials next year).

He, Chris Claremont, and Roy Thomas made some mad money today with the lines they had.

Alright, now this one isn't half bad...

Cal Dodd - voice of Wolverine from X-Men: The Animated Series (also voicing him in the upcoming X-Men '97 show)

Depending on the price, I might have to get my Wolverine Funko Pop signed by him.

It's still a meh lineup for me thus far.

Not a new guest announcement, but I just discovered that ULL has a football game on that Saturday (time TBA). I'm guessing it'll be an evening game, as it seems that's when most of their games are played, but the parking / traffic is still going to be a pain in the butt with the football crowd getting there early for tailgating. To my knowledge, they don't usually have the con on the same weekend as a home game. Should be interesting to see what that does to attendance, at least on the Saturday.

Somebody ought to ask them if they realized that. That's going to be hell for those going later in the day and those going to the game? How far is the stadium from the Cajun Dome?

A few hundred yards. They share the same parking area.

The whole reason they moved the Con out of October and into the spring several years back was due to scheduling difficulties trying to get the Cajundome booked on a weekend with no UL home games. It was something they were always trying to avoid. After two years of cancellations and having so delayed the announcement if their return, this is probably all they could get. But it sounds less than ideal.

Across the street. An easy walk to the Dome from the field.

Next guest announcement....Omri Katz.

You're probably saying to yourself, "Who?" No surprise. He's from the Hocus Pocus and Eerie, Indiana. And judging from the comments, people are excited by this.

What.....the.....fork?

It's a terrible lineup. I still may go to hit the vendors but with Geek'd Con next month and Fan Expo New Orleans in January (nothing announced yet but Fan Expo is always good), this is an easy skip for me. They're going to have to do better than this going forward. Even for a mid size con you've got to have at least one big name to anchor things. Kristy Swanson and Sting (who you have like five chances to meet a year regardless of where you live) for one day are not headliners. This is a step above flea market meet and greets. Possibly their worst guest lineup ever.

Does this convention ever reach out to known cosplayers to come do a panel? I've been following a bunch over the years and not once have I see anyone even mention going to Louisiana comic con.

The pandemic helped no one, but I wonder: Are cons in general getting pinched by middle-class people just having less disposable income these days? Especially mid-level cons?

I could be wrong because my first con with the family was January 2016, but: Just seemed like from talking to others who were doing cons (usually Wizard World in New Orleans) in the early 2010s, that it kinda sorta wasn't that expensive back then unless you were loading up on celebrity pics/autographs. I mean, people back then would still talk about dropping money on a convention, yes, but I bet whatever at a con was $100 in 2012 (tix, autographs, merch, whatever) would be $200-250 today.

I think it's the opposite, really. As cons have become more generalist and grown in attendance, they're constantly pushing the limits of what people are willing to pay. And so far people are willing to pay the prices. People I got autographs from for $25 or $30 10 years ago are charging $50 or more now and getting it.

Cons used to be niche but are pretty big business now and everyone is cashing in. As a result prices go up and up.

I know they've had some cosplayers in the past. Not sure what they're doing this year, though, as everything seems to be running off a different gameplan.
