Competing offers for Armstead (1 Viewer)

And Dolphins probably realized he's injury prone. He may get $22 million per year but but it's probably all funny money and he won't see 30% of it while he got 100% of his contract worth here. So, I knows he'll probably make more realized income here through restructure and signing bonuses

That’s really the main thing that has me worried…. Armstead, a guy that has made a name for himself as a New Orleans Saint, needed something extra to consider coming back to NO.

If he isn’t feeling what is going on here… that’s a MASSIVE red flag that other FAs view the Saints as an undesirable destination at this point!

That’s why they have to settle for their “splash” signings to be Kentavius Street and Kirk Merritt. 😔
I see it the same way. Luckily I’ve got plenty of experience being a fan during the pre Payton & Brees years. 😂

Shoot they should’ve already known that Taker.

I think he wants to stay in New Orleans but is torn b/c he can get alot of $$ too and this will be his last time to do so.

It could be Terrell Armstead and the Dolphins weren't on the same page with the money.
Or it could be that Terrell was turned off by how Miami organization is ran. Who knows.

But personally, there are several NFL teams that are just poorly ran such as Raiders, Falcons, Dolphins, Browns, Jets, Panthers, Texans, Seahawks, Jags, Lions, Bears, Cowboys, Packers and Titans (two of the NFL's biggest underachievers), Vikings, and Commanders (formerly Redskins). Why would any decent player go to any of these teams especially over a team like the Saints that has a recently, long history of winning.
$$$ is the answer.

It makes players who want to play in warmer cities sign with Cleveland. It also makes the players who are trying to escape poorly run franchises....sign with Cleveland. (other franchises too, but Cleveland is just so easy and obvious right now). There are 230M guaranteed reasons that a decent player would go there. And it's obvious that's the reason. (silly question)

I don't begrudge anyone "getting paid", not even "stupid money", but I wish they wouldn't disrespect us by peddling some BS story. DW4 is the obvious, most recent reference. OBJ is another one. Said he wanted to go somewhere with more "touches" available for him. Shuns the hometown Saints, who are so thirsty for a sure-handed receiver that he would've been the instant #1 and the offense probably would have run through him. He was looking at a career year, in touches, and probably would've been the "missing link" to make the Saints serious contenders. Instead, signs with the Rams, where he was at best a #3 receiver option (same as the Browns team he forced his way out of) and cited the Rams being SB contenders; at the time he signed, they were no more of a contender than the Saints. So why did he make a decision that seems so head-scratching from his stated reason? We don't know what the Saints offer looked like, but if we could find out, I'm willing to bet it was the money.

It's always the $$$. These guys want paid, but they don't want us to know they want paid. FWIW, I can respect a guy more if he just says "I'm hoping to go to an organization that ___________________ (fill in the blank for truly desired outcome), but if the money was right, I'd consider other options." I hear THAT, and think "smart guy....so would I". I hear the former and think "yeah, right"; then when he signs, it's confirmed that "yep....LIAR....can't be trusted." And once you acquire a reputation as a mercenary/whore who sells to the highest bidder, those are the only folks interested in you. JMO...

I agree. Armstead has never talked about money; never complained about his contract, or the Saints organization; and has publically stated he hasn't ruled out returning to the Saints "if the money was right."

Without using the words, I've heard him say "I'd really like to stay here, but I need to be paid enough to do that." And he doesn't know what that $$$ looks like for a 30-yr old LT who is oft-injured, but dominating when available. Only 1 way to find out. I'm sure he and the Dolphins have talked $$$, and I'll bet the Dolphins get the sense he'd like to stay in NO. But now he's got a number to return to NO and he can say "can we get in this ballpark of compensation, without me up-ending my life to leave, and without you rolling the dice on a replacement LT?" His actions are consistent with his words, IMO. We'll either give him a competitive offer and he'll stay; or we won't (in his eyes) and he'll move on.

I'm torn on Armstead. He's one of the best (perhaps THE best) LTs in the game, when healthy, and has been the commensurate team player. He routinely stifles every top EDGE rusher he faces....just flat-out stonewalls them. But he's never played a 16 game season over his entire career. I could forgive that, but he's parked next to Peat on the line. Problem with that is Peat is his backup LT, but probably even less durable than Armstead. And because of these 2, our line isn't plug-n-play with backup OL, but re-shuffled. This means our entire left side is constantly at risk of re-shuffling the entire front. The best OLs are the result of continuity. And I think that's what is keeping the Saints OL from being great. We have a good to very good line. If it remained mostly intact for the entire season (everyone misses a start, here & there), they'd be a great line.

If we didn't have Peat, I'd be more inclined to keep Armstead. If we had a backup LT that was better than Peat, I'd like to keep Armstead. But one of these 2, or possibly both, need to be replaced with more durable talent, even if its a step below in talent level. I guess it all boils down to whether the Saints believe they have Armstead's replacement in-house (move Ram?). You don't let LTs of Armstead's caliber walk, hoping to find a replacement; you let 'em walk because you already have the replacement. And if you look at the history of the Saints, that's exactly what they've always done. Whether they've found 'em, or developed 'em, we've always had a top notch LT in the pipeline.

Sorry if already mentioned, but isn't Tua a southpaw? Armstead wouldn't be protecting his blindside.
But he would be protecting Bridgewater's rear. 🤔

I would rather have two decent options that can stay healthy than one great player or any rely on. I hope he signs with the Dolphins. Maybe we can trade them Peat too.

I think we will be just fine with what we have, and we will definitely draft a tackle in the first two rounds. IMO.

All players want to get played and Drew got top dollar with us up until the last few years. Aaron, the baby, Rogers just fleeced the Pack for 50 mil at 38 years old. OBJ? Post Drew Saints or LA who was going all-in on a ring (which they did win), I think he made the right call. Teams will cut or trade you if they feel it's in the best interest (see Baker), so it's two sides to the story.
