Jackson parish sheriffs office is reporting 54 cases today. State website is reporting 22. Something is not right here. I trust the sheriffs office. This sheriff isn’t one to make stuff up.

Even though the big hotspots are flattening the curve, I worry that we are overlooking the infancy of thousands of new hotspots across the country.

I don't know...but, iirc, the reason for the differing counts might be because of who is administering the testing. I don't remember the details, but for the positives to count, I think it has to be certified in a CDC lab. At least I think it was like that at some point.

Which is a big problem then.

If all positive tests are not being counted, then how are we to access our ability to phase in a resumption to normality.

Local Sheriffs in deep Trump country have nothing to gain from inflating numbers. The curve in Jackson Parish (for example) should be tracked independently of the country or state. The virus doesn’t know or care what country or state it is in.

These are all local outbreaks on a neighborhood level. Even in places like NYC, but especially in places like Jonesboro Lousiana, where all 8,000 people probably touch the same Circke K door handle on a weekly basis.

300 people on ventilators Jackson, Lincoln, and Bienville parishes combined is just as debilitating to the system as thousands in Jefferson parish.

Social distancing has not been taken seriously everywhere, even if states with responsible stay at home areas.

Our tracking needs to be accurate and precise.

I hope that the people in the states that have begun to reopen use common sense. In my area hospitals are going to be open to elective procedures. I don't understand the pressing need to open bowling alleys and tattoo parlors but I'm sure that it's a regional thing that I wouldn't understand.

I hope that we don't see spikes in those areas in a few weeks. You know that people will be crossing borders and bringing the virus with them.

Looks like the former Captain of the USS Roosevelt will be getting his job back. If so, then good for him. I thought stripping him of his position was stupid to begin with.

I am impressed with the news that I have seen, where very few businesses are responding.

Obviously we have good folks out there who value their life more than $$$ 😍

I agree completely. I'm just not entirely sure what the reasons or motivations are behind the numbers. I'd rather get an accurate count for everything so that we can make informed policy decisions (yeah right, I know). I don't know what can be done about it though.

Guys, can we keep the politics out of this?
Saying something absolutely stupid isn't political. I'd mock anyone for saying something that stupid.

The Danger is someone will actually listen to this and try it.

EDIT:

What we need is clear and consistent information. We need clear and simple instructions. The general public, as a whole, is not very smart. Lots of smart individuals, lots of 'tough guys' who choose to ignore warnings, and others who don't know enough to know what's reasonable and what't not. many people are paralyzed with fear, forgetting all of the basics of how to protect yourself. Any time any official, be it a doctor, politician, general manager of a plant, says something mind numbingly stupid, or wrong, it needs to be corrected.

This pandemic demarcates the definitive point in history where the US will stop being seen as the world leader.

Possibly, but, I don't think so. We're still way ahead in a lot of ways compared to our closest competitors in terms of GDP, military strength, technology and talent. I think we've lost a lot of ground though. Our infrastructure is crumbling in a lot of areas, health care leaves a lot to be desired and our education system is falling behind a lot of 1st world countries.

A lot of that had already started years ago, so I'm not convinced this epidemic is the turning point. We're hardly the only country taking it on the chin, and we've got the ability and strength to weather this. I'm still hopeful. But it's not gonna be our politicians who turn this around, but the grassroots, everyday people trying to help make a difference.

In spite of a lot of the crap spewed in the news, there are good stories happening in a lot of places, they're just not super sexy or sells papers or ads. It is what it is.

There is scientific evidence that UV light can be used to disinfect public areas and it can be done safely. If it's going to prevent spreading it, why not use it? With all the things that are unknown about the virus, it seems shortsighted to just dismiss it out of hand when it is a proven method and has been for years and it is an inexpensive solution.
