I will say the home made masks can be much harder to breath through, especially when talking. Surgical style masks are far easier.

I roll with a home made "surgical style" cloth mask, and a bandana over top of that, and it's just fine to breathe through for me.

Looks like Florida is holding in a steady pattern, not really dropping...

I certainly agree that if they claim they're using data/metric-based milestones, tell us what those are. They're numbers, they're not judgment . . . so give us the numbers. OR don't characterize that way.

Here's the money quote - this is probably the closest thing to the city's actual plan - 'wait and see':

Wilson says there's no right or wrong approach but, in this instance, it's best not to be first. He says if other states or parishes open sooner, New Orleans health officials can collect information based on their results.
“As we take a more staged approach, yes, it might have an effect on the economy, keeping things shut down. But in the long run, a lot of people being sick and a lot of people dying has an effect as well," Wilson explained. “So, we definitely want to avoid that.”

Don't worry. The Louisiana legislature will prove once and for all that you can gather crowds together in enclosed spaces without masks without spreading the disease. They're going to open it right up for you!

I'm not suggesting that we shouldn't wear masks or that we should immediately have large gatherings. But the goal was never to be able to do so without spreading the disease. That's an unrealistic expectation. The goal was to make sure the medical infrastructure could handle an outbreak. We passed that test with flying colors and only saw a fraction of what we were told we would. We can't stay at home waiting for there to be no risk. That will literally never happen.

Basically the guidelines say we could have started Phase 1 last week but the City wants to wait. OK, whatever, but quit BSing about how you're using the federal guidelines.

I know you have FEELINGS about the Mayor, and I share many of them but to be fair, the City can't start Phase 1 until the Governor lifts the Stay at Home Order and he has not done that yet. So, even if she wanted to, the Mayor can't start Phase 1. And yes, I get that she didn't even allow the small things that the Governor expanded, but I don't think those things were going to save the economy anyway.

Yes, but if people refuse to use masks and social distance before the stay a home order is lifted, what do you think the odds that people will do it after it is lifted? If we want to get businesses back running, it's going to take people taking steps to reduce infections or we are going to be right back in a situation where the health care system will get overwhelmed. There will be a price of human lives in choosing to open back up for business, but it can be reduced and we can maybe avoid overwhelming the health care system if people would just take simple steps to avoid as many infections as possible.

But, I don't see people taking those steps now and I don't think it will get any better so the question becomes how many lives are you willing to sacrifice to open businesses back up? It's obviously a calculus we make all the time in regards to driving cars, flying planes, etc. but it's a calculus we need to be aware of in regard to this.

And, as good a job as the citizens of New Orleans are doing in reducing infections, it won't matter in the long run if large parts of the rest of the state ignores it and spread it back to New Orleans after we open back up for business. Which is the reason for the slow phased approach. If we don't do that, we are going to end up right back her again. Likely in less than a month.

The Trump administration projects about 3,000 daily deaths by early June.

As President Trump presses for states to reopen their economies, his administration is privately projecting a steady rise in the number of cases and deaths from coronavirus over the next several weeks, reaching about 3,000 daily deaths on June 1, according to an internal document obtained by The New York Times, nearly double from the current level of about 1,750.

The projections, based on modeling by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and pulled together in chart form by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, forecast about 200,000 new cases each day by the end of the month, up from about 25,000 cases now.

The numbers underscore a sobering reality: While the United States has been hunkered down for the past seven weeks, not much has changed. And the reopening to the economy will make matters worse...…...

I understand she can't overrule the governor's order to reopen anything beyond what's in his order but her words and deeds indicate she is flatly ignoring his order as it pertains to any openings and will keep things closed until .. .. whenever she thinks the time is right, regardless of our actual case numbers or hospital resources.

I've been looking for our state and local leaders to lay out their plan to re-open the state. JBE was a little slow to provide it but at least he issued it and is standing behind it, pointing out which specific locations are lagging in their metrics, etc. (I still think he is being too conservative and applying a one size fits all model makes no sense - what's happening in Lake Providence shouldn't drive what happens in Lafayette, but, that's another discussion).

LaToya is just ducking the question.
