Shutting down schools for fall four months out seems just as reactionary and agenda-driven as some of the "reopen everything ASAP" plans.

Agree.

The flip side is Cal Universities start Fall semester in 3 months. Course scheduling for Fall is probably due. College housing is typically seasonal with June, July, August being when students sign leases for on campus and off housing. If classes are going to be 100% online, then let students plan to stay at home. It also give students an opportunity to transfer or take a gap semester/year. States are looking at shortfalls and cutting education is as American as apple pie.

So, New Orleans Phase One plan is similar to what the Governor said yesterday except for a few details:

Interestingly, the Mayor dropped the requirement that all businesses keep a log of customer names and numbers, but she is requiring that restaurants only open at 25% capacity and that they have to take reservations, ever for walk-up customers, which will mean taking everyone's name and phone number. They have to keep it for 21 days.

My company started having employees come into the office to clear out their desks. They are also being allowed to take their company monitors and any other company gear home with them like office chairs.

Our customer support teams don't have a phone system that lets them take calls from home so we are freeing up floor space to let them spread WAAAY out. I think they are setting them up for a 15' separation.

I am quite uncomfortable giving this information. Not saying I wouldn’t. This gives me much pause.

I hear you. I mean, I'm never all that comfortable giving out private information to anyone. But, at the same point, I've given out this information plenty times to make reservations at restaurants and given out even more information to get an Uber, get on a plane, etc. I guess it's the fact that the government will have easy access to it that makes the difference. But, in the end, it's really not much different than making a reservation.

At the same time, I'm probably not going to go eat at a restaurant while this is going on anyway.

And many Cal schools have huge enrollments of foreign students
For families and for teachers I’d much rather know too soon than too late

If the government needs it, they have access to it already anyway. Debit cards, surveillance cameras, cell phone data, etc.

I think people are being overly paranoid about this.

Doesn’t mean we should make it easier for government. I don’t disagree with your statement. Snowden has said he could just pop in your email address and see everything. I seriously doubt that was stopped.

I've been a proponent for reopening, but doing it in a way that not only keeps people safe, but also preaches a message that things are not normal to where people relax.

I think this specific measure not only directly helps on the safety/tracking front, but also helps keep people in line mentally from falling into the belief that things are going to be normal now.
