Cutting the cable, lets talk options and media setups (2 Viewers)

My Uverse renewal comes up every August and every year I say I am not renewing. The conveniences and ease of use of Uverse are a big factor for the lo-tech wife so that has been a big deciding factor for my decisions in the past.

The alternatives like sling are enticing but they seem to all come with limitations such as one device usage per subscription. I need to be able to run at least two devices at the same time and a DVR set up for 3 tvs to share. If I pay for two Sling subscriptions I might as well stay with Uverse for the convenience.

Any suggestions?

I use the FireStick on 2 different machines to one Amazon prime account, then I side load apps. You need to decide your requirements (mine was WatchESPN), then get devices, test, and decide what works, including for a lo-tech person. Example: One Netflix account works on multiple TVs. I was not aware of the limit of SlingTV.

My setup is HD Indoor Attic Antenna feeds all coax in house for local HD channels. Picture is much better than via other sources.

Then I got 2 FireSticks, 2 TVs, with one Amazon Prime account gives me WatchESPN and all ESPN channels live on both FireSticks.

Followed I side-loaded apps to watch other shows, and not worry about a DVR but to watch recorded shows from the cloud.

This does not require multiple accounts. But your limitations are hammered by your own personal requirements and then imagination.

Whatever you do, test before you cut. Make sure you can live with the solution.

I have a couple of Armada Mach 8s that run Kodi (I have both the Android and Linux versions). Cloudwords make it really easy to install packages of Add-ons which will have pretty much everything you need.
I saw that one. I can't seem to find any place to buy it.

I got them from Amazon.

I have cut the cord and use Netlix/Amazon Prime/Hulu. I also have a HD Antenna. The only problem is that I cannot get fox on the antenna to save my life. It's extremely frustrating (i live near Tulane University). So it's tough to get Saints games. I do not miss cable at all.

How are y'all outside LA watching Saints games? We're moving to Atlanta next month, and would love to ditch DTV & Sunday Ticket. Before we weren't close enough to a city for the antenna option.

In that situation I'd pony up the money for Sunday Ticket. Or I'd plan on spending the dollars at a sports bar. Being in Atlanta, you're likely to see some saints games broadcast when they don't conflict with Atlanta games.

So will they play media like a WD Live or is it streaming only?

Yes I believe so. The android version can also handle some other apps. The Linux version boots to Kodi natively. I believe they both will handle external media although I have messed with that yet.

Does anybody else have problems with Hulu Plus being super-slow? I have no problem with Netflix, Youtube or Amazon Prime and my internet goes about 15 mbps, which should be plenty. But Hulu is constantly interrupted by buffering. Using PS3 with a wireless connection - wired is not an option unfortunately.

Thanks for the input. I will look into Firesticks.

I have been a Netflix user since the dvd rentals only days. I only do the streaming service now and have always thought it was a great value. I have also been using Hulu off and on for a few years now and have been happy with their service overall.

I gave Sling TV a shot and liked it overall. The menu could have a slight delay here and there but picture quality was good if you have a good internet connection. Some of the channels even have some of their programs available similar to "on demand".

Good solutions to cutting cable/satellite bill and all the excessive commercials and worthless infomercials.

Not to tangent here but I put the TVMC app on my Nexus 5 phone that Kodi announced and...well, its Kodi on your phone/tablet. Comes preloaded with popular add-ons/channels. The UI is literally just miniaturized, rather than mobilized so the buttons are a bit small but it seems to work well. Good for when I'm on the road.

That's pretty cool. I can't imagine how it would eat cellular data, but that's awesome for wifi. I may have just found a use for my Nexus tablet. :9:
