Cutting the cable, lets talk options and media setups

I have Cox and Uverse offered me much more service for nearly half the monthly cost. Why did you switch from Uverse to Cox? I am happy with the service of Cox, but the price is absolutely ridiculous.

The cost for cable service doesn't warrant it with the amount I've been watching these days. And what I mainly watch is all on network TV (with a few exceptions). Uverse's internet speed is terribly slow compared to Cox and I'm always having issues with drops and slowness.

My directv contract expires in August and I'm seriously contemplating getting the $25/month SlingTV package (ESPN is included) and using broadcast TV and hulu/Netflix etc as my main method of media consumption. I've got a Playstation in the living room and Roku in the bedroom. I haven't been keeping up with this thread but am gonna peruse it to see others' reviews and experiences.

Anyone have any experience with the setup I'm thinking about trying? How fast of an Internet connection do y'all think I'd need to have to make this work successfully?

I'm just going to suspend my directv (just in case I find the switch to not be what I'm looking for) while I try it out but wanna go into it as prepared as possible since I'm gonna be tinkering with **** right when the season is kicking off.

My main concern is that I don't wanna have to do a whole bunch of **** just to watch some tv. I prefer total lethargy when going into a television coma, y'know?

Just as a fun notice to all the people considering cutting cable and going with online streaming programming: this month my household - which consists of my wife (a teacher and thus off all summer with naught to do but watch our 3 kids), me, and the kids - has already consumed 700 GB of data, according to our internet provider. Our "limit" is 350 GB per payment period ... so we've doubled it with time yet to spare. Last month we did the same number of 700 GB, mainly because she and the kids stream Netflix/Hulu all day long.

I'm waiting to see if Cox requires us to pay for a higher tier of internet subscription now, or if they will just let it pass. The good news is this spike only happens in the summer; all non-summer months we usually consume between 200-280 GB of data. And some of that is digital game downloads (darn PS+ and Xbox Gold free games ).

It's a good deal. I'm glad to see they're still offering it. I'll get another Roku when I get the sling tv.

I use Genesis via Kodi on my Fire Stick and Showbox on phone. Look for Genesis.

I have a couple of Armada Mach 8s that run Kodi (I have both the Android and Linux versions). Cloudwords make it really easy to install packages of Add-ons which will have pretty much everything you need.

My Uverse renewal comes up every August and every year I say I am not renewing. The conveniences and ease of use of Uverse are a big factor for the lo-tech wife so that has been a big deciding factor for my decisions in the past.

The alternatives like sling are enticing but they seem to all come with limitations such as one device usage per subscription. I need to be able to run at least two devices at the same time and a DVR set up for 3 tvs to share. If I pay for two Sling subscriptions I might as well stay with Uverse for the convenience.

Any suggestions?

I use the FireStick on 2 different machines to one Amazon prime account, then I side load apps. You need to decide your requirements (mine was WatchESPN), then get devices, test, and decide what works, including for a lo-tech person. Example: One Netflix account works on multiple TVs. I was not aware of the limit of SlingTV.

My setup is HD Indoor Attic Antenna feeds all coax in house for local HD channels. Picture is much better than via other sources.

Then I got 2 FireSticks, 2 TVs, with one Amazon Prime account gives me WatchESPN and all ESPN channels live on both FireSticks.

Followed I side-loaded apps to watch other shows, and not worry about a DVR but to watch recorded shows from the cloud.

This does not require multiple accounts. But your limitations are hammered by your own personal requirements and then imagination.

Whatever you do, test before you cut. Make sure you can live with the solution.
