Cutting the cable, lets talk options and media setups (2 Viewers)

Kodi is a open source software available on a number of platforms that allows streaming via "add-ons" from various sources around the web (tons of discussion here).

There are a number of add-ons that are not supported by Kodi that will stream copyrighted material. In fact they have been specifically disclaimed by Kodi, and they have gone after people that have conflated Kodi with those add-ons.

There are number of companies that are installing Kodi to dedicated hardware (usually on Android) and reselling those boxes, which is legal, though subject to Kodi's open-source licensing terms. The one you linked appears to be one of the more shady outfits.

:9: gotcha. $175 didn't seem like a big amount considering what I pay per month to DTV, but I was wondering how they could do this legally and if I'd end up with something that got shut down.

I've had a growing feeling that at some point soon (perhaps this year) there will be some kind of lawsuit or something brought against Kodi because of this by someone the the Film/Tv industry or perhaps by the gov't. It seems like it's getting too popular and now the shady folks are creating a cash grab feeding frenzy before it gets cut off kind of thing.

There are less expensive options from more reputable sources. And you can always install the software for free on a computer or an Android device, although there are certain advantages to having a dedicated appliance.

I agree that it's on some people's radar, but I'm not sure how they are going to be able to shut it down, considering it's open source and widely available.

I'm thinking since the wife and kids are at home all day it would be best to have a dedicated one that's easy to navigate which is what intrigued me about this one.

Do you have a Kodi device that you'd recommend? Or Samsung is 4k so I think it would make sense to use something that works with that

I just wanna be able to watch sports and shows that we like. I already have a website that I use to watch shows and it posts the episodes the next day.

It's definitely on KODI's radar as I've seen a few messages from the developers who stated they were going to begin going after those type of dealers to protect the integrity of KODI, not as much as the add-on developers, but those that create those shady boxes.

If you have a Fire Stick/TV, it can be easily sideloaded there, unless you're looking for an actual box.

Read through the Kodi thread (my recommendation is in there too). Kodi is not terribly user friendly and my experience with live sports has been less than stellar. Supposedly it supports 4k, but I haven't found any 4k content worth a crap.

However, once you find what you're looking for, it's a great platform.

Box or stick, no preference there. Ideally I'd like to be able to watch Saints and LSU games without having to go to my parents house or to a sports bar but I guess an antenna in the attic could do that?

I've read through the thread for a good bit, but honestly it's all pretty greek to me cuz I've had cable or DTV for all of my life. I do have a website we like that does the shows now, but if was on an app interface or a box that would make it even easier. My boys are very tech savvy but are 7 and 10.

The majority of shows we watch are ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW and of course the boys enjoy Disney channel shows. Most of these have apps, I just hate the commercial delays that often show the same 3 commercials over and over.

There's a link in this thread (I believe provided by MLU) that gives instructions on how to install KODI on either the Amazon Fire Stick or TV. It's pretty simple. I know some who sells the Fire Stick/TV on eBay that's loaded with KODI for you.

Very cool I'll search for the link and check ebay as well.

Thanks dude I hate to be that guy that's like "hey I get there's tons of info in here but could you tell me specifically what I need" but my wife wants DTV gone and it comes out again on the 10th or 11th I think lol
