Defense wins championships (6 Viewers)

The Dome patrol was from 1986 - 1992... Swilling was traded after the 1992 season

I should have said the Jim Mora era. The Dome Patrol days were his best defenses, but he always had high ranked defenses with low ranked offenses.

The Saints didn't win a single playoff game in 4 tries with one of the dominant defenses at that time. The 49ers are why they never won the division, but they never played the 49ers in the playoffs.

The reason they couldn't win a single playoff game with those top level defenses is because there offenses were bottom level offenses.

Neither offense or defense alone wins championships. Having the best balance between offense, defense and special teams and a little good fortune are what wins championships.

Special teams was just as important to the Saints winning the Super Bowl as their offense and defense was.

The Eagles offense, as good as they were, did benefit from a few short fields thanks to the D.
The flip side of that is the offense being able to move the ball and score off of those opportunities put pressure on the Chiefs offense which helped the defense. The Eagles offense, defense and special teams in combination one that game.

Look at all the field goals the kicker made. If he misses any of those it's points not scored and gives the Chiefs better starting field position.

Most people say the same things you are saying but it isn't correct...
While we didn't have the number 1 ranked O we had some pretty well ranked units... 1987 was the best year.
Number 2 in points & 14th in total yards.
We always had a good RB & a pretty good WR under Mora...
Our problem was the playoffs... Carl Smith just always called a horrible game!
Very, very predicable Offense!

I absolute agree with you that you have to have some balance but a dominate D with a capable O usually ends up with a blow out...
A dominate O with a capable D usually ends in a shoot-out!

I think we also saw that we need playmakers on defense more than we need a wholesale scheme change. The Eagles live in their nickel package (81% of snaps), but they have a lot more talent at every level.

For the season DVOA ranks, the Eagles had the #1 defense and #13 offense. The Chiefs had the #8 offense and the #12 defense. Defense won this championship.

Indeed. That defense put the offense in position to look unstoppable.

The Dome Patrol did the same thing against the Eagles, we just didn’t have a quarterback who could capitalize.
Man! You had to bring that game up...
Thanks for peeing in my coffee this morning...;)

Leading 20-7 in the 3rd quarter, our wonderful self proclaimed leader of the Who-Dat Nation throws 3 picks
with one of them being a pick 6 & a safety & we lose 36-20...:mad1:
Oh Yea... It was the Eagles!

It looked like the Eagles ran a lot of 4 man fronts last night..

We didn't need a player of Baun's talent on our team...
DA's departing gift!

The Chiefs got done to them what Spags did to Brady twice with the Giants. Get in his face and produce disruption while the secondary covered the receivers long enough that the QB had nowhere to go. Made passes miss and generated sacks and turnovers.

Let’s be REAL.
The Chiefs have a 💩 tastic OLine
They don’t have a #1 or a #2 WR
Their TE is long in the tooth and may hang up his cleats
They don’t have a run game
They literally have nothing on offense.

The Eagles have the best roster from Top to bottom. This was a mismatch.
The Eagles were the better team by a wide margin.
Huge props to the Eagles for handling their business like they should have.

Plus, Jalen CAN say that about the defense bc he has the BEST RB, a bonafide #1 WR, and bonafide #2 WR, and a good TE.

We don’t have the luxury of having a QB like Jalen, we don’t have a #1 WR. Heck our WRs are not even a Smith. Yes we need skill position players. So remember that come draft time

Right... and KC has had a top 10 defense (top 5 in points allowed) all year... It didn't help them much in the biggest game of the year against a loaded offense that can hang a 40 burger on you, and attack you at all levels.... Also KC's offense has been living on crazy close wins all year.... That luck ran out, when they faced a front 4 that could exploit their weakness on the Oline.

Since we're doing superficial cliches, the best defense is a good offense. So, even if defense truly wins championships, then the best defense is a good offense.

The Saints during the era of the Dome Patrol had historically top level defenses. They rarely made it to the playoffs and they never won one.

What wins championships is a solid, well balanced team and some good fortune with the uncontrollable factors, like the literal bounce of the ball.
And vice versa....I've always disagreed with this statement that "defense wins championships".....Complementary football wins championships....

We all saw in 2023 with our own Saints, that defense was easily good enough to go to the playoffs, they got a ton of turnovers and were in the 8th with points allowed.....but the offense? Ugh.....
