N/S Denver media absolutely shreds Payton.. (2 Viewers)

I know my view on this isn’t popular, but I’m glad the arrogant coach is not here. I’m not a DA fan but we we’ve been stuck in mediocre since winning the Super Bowl. He coached teams with great talent and couldn’t put it together.
Unless your definition of mediocre is “any team that doesn’t win the SB,” we were definitely not stuck in mediocre since we won the SB. We had many double-digit win seasons and playoff wins.

Gregg Williams leaving Roman Harper on Vernon Davis cost the Saints their second ring.

The refs flagrantly cost the Saints their third ring.

Do you even understand how difficult it is to get ONE ring?
I do, SP had Brees. He was great. If Bellicheck had Brees in his prime he would’ve won multiple superbowls like he did with Brady. SP rode the coattails of Brees.

Brees carried the team in spite of SP. SP did not add value. Did the team fold when he was suspended? No. Did the team look much worse when Brees retired? Yes.

The team has had three 13-3 seasons, one 12-4 season and three 11-5 seasons and 5 division titles since the Super Bowl. Those were not mediocre seasons.

It is hard for me to take seriously someone who give nicknames to people they are criticizing.

With pieces like this, it is more about the person writing than the person that is the subject.

Simply lazy journalism.

On one hand I see where you're coming from. I've been a very vocal critic of SP since he left the way he did. He was always brash and arrogant but he was our HC and I knew that if he wasn't our HC then he wouldn't be my cup of tea. Same thing with CGJ and several others. I couldn't stand Steve Smith or Cam Newton. Had they been wearing black and gold I would've loved them. Thin line between love and extreme dislike.

But I say all that to say this, even for a hardcore SP critic like me, to call the man mediocre is just inaccurate imho. The dude could flat out coach football teams. Don't care for him at all now but he was great with the Saints. Of course he had flaws. A lot of flaws. But he was great. Won a Super Bowl in New Orleans and should've gone to at least two more if Gregg Williams and some refs use common sense at the end of those NFCCGs.

Indeed. I can understand folks who were ready to see SP leave and/or had other strong criticism of him. I mostly disagree with that, but I understand the point of view. But to call SP “mediocre” since XLIV, or suggest he only rode Brees’ coattails is just objectively and ridiculously wrong.

Denver Fan before the 5 game winning streak.

The difference between the two teams couldn't have been different though. DA inherited a team that won 9 games despite some of the worst circumstance a team could have faced and the team got worse. Payton came to a team that hadn't won 9 games since 2016 and should get them back to that 9 win mark in year 1.
I don't want to fall in that trap of thinking that players should be 'at least as good' as they were under the previous leadership. With each coaching change comes new philosophies & schemes. It's easy to assume that Dennis knew everything that Sean was doing and that he would just continue with the status quo. It's pretty easy to see that he has a much different style than Payton.

The players know that things have changed as it pertains to coaching styles & expectations. No doubt both Sean & Dennis are reminding their kids that there's a new sheriff in town and that they need to trust the new philosophy for success. I doubt seriously that DA came in saying that they were going to do everything just as coach Payton used to do it.

For every coach to gain/earn everyone's trust, the players need to see his 'process' getting results , and they need to see the kind of changes that (at least gradually) actually make the team better. A new coach has limited time before everyone (inside & outside the organization) loses faith and develops a bad attitude about what he can really do for the team.

Exactly, if you would prefer to go back to 20 seasons without a winning one.....or (Mora years) getting bounced in the 1st playoff game every year, then your definition of mediocrity is....lets say....."curious" if you are a lifelong Saints fan.....

This may be the most idiotic statement I've ever read on this board.....it's not that your view is "unpopular" it's that it completely detached from reality.....
