Deonte Harris is apparently... (1 Viewer)

....showing he is more or can be more than just a special teams beast! His route running, ability to separate and run away from defenders after the catch is apparent, according to reports I have been hearing from WWL reports. A very pleasant surprise this camp.
I’m not surprised, he’s explosive and has intangibles that’s we need to blend into the offence.

Outside WRs Thomas/Sanders, Slot Harris, TE Cook, and RB AK41. Tell me how you stopping that if your the Bucs.

I could say the same thing about Tampa. They have Evans, Godwin, shady McCoy, Cameron Brate , and Gronkowski catching, with Captain Checkdown throwing to them.

However the Saints will win, they have more chemistry.

I don't think so....actually the Bucs secondary is trash compared to ours. We match up on Defensive really well. Evans/Latt Godwin/Jack Brate-Gronk/Jenkins-CGJ, TB offensive line is trash other Jensen/Marpet.

Deonte can be a much bigger contributor than Michael Lewis was offensively, as his agility is far superior. Beerman was a bullet in a straight line, had good vision, and was fine making one cut to change direction, but he wasn't much of a threat to catch a swing pattern and create his own lane with lateral movement like Deonte has already shown flashes of doing.

On the other hand, Tyreek is much bigger than Deonte is, and I think it's a stretch to think he can be an every-down WR who can be asked to high-point balls regularly downfield or block effectively in the running or screen game. I think he's a guy who can take the lid off here and there, make plays in space, and be a decoy to loosen things up for others. Maybe as good as Tyreek pound-for-pound.

Having said all that, I hope Deonte proves me dead wrong and makes the pro bowl as a WR. I just don't see him getting that much run.

I agree, I view him more like a Dexter Mccluster, but with higher upside

You could say that, but it really isn't relevant due to the fact that New Orleans has better defenders.

So I truly think our defense can slow them down

Can it be possible that the saints will have more than one WR who can run good routes and win contested throws?

Really good post. On paper, it seems like we have sooooo many offensive weapons. Cook and Brees lit up the 2nd half of the season, especially in the red zone. Kamara is healthy. CGM - no need to discuss. Reports Tre is coming into his own. Emmanuel Sanders. Taysom Hill. Ty Mongomery - one of my favorite surprises for the season and as you discussed, Deonte. Wow! How will Brees and SP carve up targets? And with the emergence of Hill as QB and Jamies, SP will introduce the bomb again this year - at least to some degree.

Good luck DCs!

I’m not surprised at all. I thought for sure he would be our 3rd or 4th receiver this year. He’s got a chance to play over Tre’Quan IMO. He’s poor man’s Tyreke Hill in that he’s small & really fast. I just hope we don’t waste his talent with Drew not being able to hit him on those deep balls, but that’s what you got Taysom for as well. The one big play in the playoff game was the deep ball from Taysom to Deonte. He’s shown he can be dangerous in the end around/running game. Now hopefully we can see him take some of those quick slants 80 yards for TDs as well.

Doug Mouton tweeting on Harris this morning. He is going to have a special on Harris on the 10pm sports segment tonight. Looks like Saints staff is got a lot in store for Harris. Could he end up a game changer? Maybe so. Would not surprise me one bit. When one considers where be came from school wise and what he did and accomplished as a rookie, was amazing. One year and an offseason under his belt; who knows what lies ahead. You just can never tell.

I think some people are underestimating just how good this kid can be. In his rookie season he made the pro bowl as a returner already showing he is the best returner in the game proving his college tape to be correct. I don’t care if he was 5’3 this kid would still be a matchup problem at WR. It wasn’t a fluke when he did line up out there he made big plays. He didn’t sit on the sidelines because of talent but simply due to not being able to be trusted yet by Brees with the little time they had and Harris having little knowledge of the playbook. He is being coached by the best WRs coach in the game with Curtis Johnson. I have no doubt Harris is going to be a huge weapon for us with defenses having to account for him every time he is on the field. No he won’t be Tyreke Hill but will be his own unique playmaker. Even if he can be half of Hill we have ourselves one of the best playmakers in the NFL.

WoW! I was excited when we first got him because of his insane tape but now that he has shown it wasn’t a fluke I can’t wait!

All of this in one rookie season!

I am a firm believer in skill set and having that first and foremost, to play a certain sport! Deonte has the skill set. That is obvious. There are numerous and many others that have come and gone, that never transitioned to a pro player. With that said, the mental approach and how a player is able to apply his mental approach on to the field, is generally what makes the difference. Pierre Thomas, Colston come to mind. Taysum Hill as well. Speed is speed. Size is size and quickness is quickness. None of those can be taught. How a skilled player takes those three physical attributes and applies the coaching he receives to those, is huge!! And I believe, Harris has done what he needs to do, to be a star.

No surprise to me. I raved about Deonte after we signed him last year. I watched his vids, but also read about what former LSU K Cole Tracy, who played wit Deonte at Assumption College, said about him:

“The coaches and scouts who spoke to Tracy at the combine wanted to know about Harris, and Tracy kept coming back to one line: He got to see some spectacular things in his one season at LSU, but Harris did some things he did not see anybody else do.

It’s the way he starts and stops, the way he sets up his blocks and reacts in real time. It was one of those things that, once you see it, you realize it is different from the way everyone else does it.“

Along wit his record 14 return TDS, Harris also had about 2800 yds as a receiver in college. So I felt he definitely had ability as a WR, but it would take a lil time. I was hoping SP would give him a chance to play a lil more there as the season went on, n he did!

Now, with his rookie year under his belt- and being named 1st team All Pro as a returner- I expect Harris to develop more as a both a returner AND receiver. I look forward to cyn him bein stronger, faster, n more confident, makin an even bigger impact this season!

I see him becoming much stronger and faster as well. I think an NFL strength and conditioning program is going to be huge for this kid. At small colleges many of these kids have no $ and are without the food budget and free workout supplements these bigger schools get handed out like candy. I remember hearing a story about Hollywood Brown for the Ravens was living off of Ramen Noodles before he got to the University of Oklahoma. We have yet to see even close to the best of Harris which is scary because this kid has already shown some flashes on offense of what he can be while giving us arguably the best returner in the NFL for the next 10+ years. He reminds me of a mixture with Hollywood Brown and Tyreke Hill. This kid really is special.
