You talk about drafting a rook and if he does not work move on. That's almost certainly a 3 yr project to see if a rook QB is a bust, more if he's mediocre, wasting the prime yrs or the rest of a career of quite a few players. The '17 class is wasted...we missed our window. Now it's all about how much time we want to wait to find out that a losing head coach is a losing head coach.
You sign Carr to a 4/160ish and we suck...we're stuck sucking for the next 4 years. We draft a rookie and he's re-Ian Book, we dump him, move on to the next one without the financial constraint. Both are likely outcomes IMO and both result in DA getting canned but only one option hamstrings us for the future after DA.
Me? For 2023, I want DA to prove he can win with a "safe ball control" offense that "minimizes mistakes" with the QB he signed last offseason to run that offensive game plan - Andy Dalton
Let's say we sign DC to a 4yr 32m a yr deal and next yr DA is horrible and get's fired we still have a good vet QB that the next HC ( hopefully an offensive-minded one) has to work with. DC has proven he can be very good with a good offensive-minded HC. We're ahead of the game. Either way in the next 2-3 yrs we can draft DC's replacement
