did i hear mort say we are near a deal w/giants for shockey (1 Viewer)

when i wake up a deal will be complete..

Ths thing won't go away...it's going to happen and I'm going to hate it.

This draft is loaded with defensive help. Good young guys to come in and crack heads and we are going to trade a good pick this year and another one next year for a oft injured cancer in the lockeroom. Now I support the one trade for a 4th because it got Vilma, but not this.

So we will have given up 4 picks (2 in 08 and 2 in 09) for two injured players, one of which tore his lockeroom in half over his selfishness.

I have supported Payton and Loomis at every turn, but I am really going to doubt if this move goes down.

Not calling you out, but what did Shockey do to tear apart his locker room? Serious question...dunno if I missed an incident. I know he wasn't on the sideline at the super bowl, but I thought that was an overblown deal...

fair enough, perhaps overstated, but there is no secret that the team started winning once he was out of the lineup. He is famous for his lockeroom tirades and dominating offensive meetings about how he is not getting the ball enough.

He's a selfish, bad guy...an injured bad guy...an injured bad guy that get's injured a lot. And we are about to give up two high draft picks in a defensive rich draft for him.

Very relevant concerns but like Randy Moss, if you put him somewhere where he can excel he will rewrite record books at his positon. Having a coach and QB here that he respects I think covers that worry, but his injury is another question mark. Dont we have enough returning next year already: Reggie, and more serious ones like Deuce, MM, Vilma? Giving up a 2nd to add another to this list makes you wonder?

Well it makes sense on many levels -

Shockey's said in the past how much he enjoyed playing for Payton.
The Saints FO has to do something more than Vilma after missing out on Samuel and Briggs to get fans excited.
They haven't re signed Johnson or Miller so they obviously need a TE.

I hope the Saints wait, making a deal now in the heat of the first few days of FA makes little sense. As far as I've heard there are no other teams inquiring about Shockey. So if they wait as the draft drawns near the Giants demands will go way down. I imagine the Giants will be calling them around April 24-25. Oh and if you haven't noticed Payton is now willing to mortgage the future by trading away '09 draft picks. Funny how a guy in the last year of his contract will change his philosphy........

He would be a great addition to the offense. He gives the help for Colston that you need,
Go get em Mic@

Shockey would do so much for this offense. He would open up things for Colston and will certainly open up the passing game even more for Reggie Bush. He would take our offense to an entirely different level. We would give so many match-up issues for defensive coordinators.

Lets see does he have injury concerns? Check. Does he have years left on a below market value contract? Check. Will we fork over future picks that will prevent the team from "building through the draft (the latest mantra of an excuse for not overpaying)? Check.

This is a very real possibility that we trade with the Giants.

swap 1sts (gives shockey a value of about pick #25/26 in the 1st), then trade pick #31 to the eagles for sheppard

Exactly. It passes the litmus test.

I don't like it because I think Shockey is a bad guy. But even if I didn't think that, I still don't like it because we would be giving up valuable draft picks. We have seen time and time again that we are used by free agents and they, more often than not, don't want to come to New Orleans (it doesn't matter why, the city or team management, they simply don't). Well how do you build a team then? Trading with other teams and giving up more and more picks, or building through young talent in the draft? I'm telling you, we will be sick this year seeing Goff and Lofton and Mayo and others tearing it up across the league.

Please do not trade our second rounder for any offensive player.

As I wrote on another thread, I can't have a problem with Shockey's personality if Payton doesn't either. He had coached him for years and knows him perfectly.

But we need to get a linebacker and a corner to possibly start next year. We can say now that free agency came and went because there are no solid starters available now.

I would prefer to wait until draft day, and as we expect if at #10 Ellis, Dorsey and Gholston are not available, then I would prefer to switch first rounders instead of giving up our second.

Another thing, since the draft may bring some surprises, I will wait and see and possibly trade down, and after then make an other offer for Shockey if we really want him.

I know most people are dissapointed, but I don't want the saints to make moves for the sake of making them. Gay at a high salary makes no sense to me. Giving up a first day on an offensive player either.

A second round pick really doesn't matter all that much. This current front office regime has been pretty much hit or miss with draft picks after the first round, with significantly more miss. Second round is usually that round where we have someone targeted and he gets selected 2 or 3 picks before ours and we end up trading back again.

Not a huge loss to me if we end up giving the second up for Shockey. I just really have a hard time believing in this team's ability to draft. If it was the Colts giving up a second, that's significant because they consistently make good draft choices.

sounds like a great idea "lets throw the world at shockey, b/c its our O that is the laughing stock of the league. We dont need to spend money on our D they are awesome...........Its that kind of thinking by our FO that just well lets say gets me mad.
