did i hear mort say we are near a deal w/giants for shockey (1 Viewer)

I don't see us landing anyone in round 2 that would have the impact of Shockey. We have a need at tight end and our receiving core as a whole is overrated.

I would welcome the move. We could get a 1-year stop gap free agent that would have just as much of an impact than almost any player we pick in round 2. Again, what have we done with our second round picks in recent years anyway? I'd surely trade Devery Henderson, Roman Harper, or a Josh Bullocks straight up for Shockey any day of the week.

We get Jeremy Shockey, Drew Brees is MVP of the NFL next season.

I think Shockey would be a great addition to our team. But, and I'm sure this has already been said a bunch before, he can't play cornerback!

Get Shockey. Still won't take the edge off the fact that our defense is NOT fixed. I like Vilma, but one guy isn't going to solve our problems on the defensive side of the ball.

Exactly. It passes the litmus test.

I don't like it because I think Shockey is a bad guy. But even if I didn't think that, I still don't like it because we would be giving up valuable draft picks. We have seen time and time again that we are used by free agents and they, more often than not, don't want to come to New Orleans (it doesn't matter why, the city or team management, they simply don't). Well how do you build a team then? Trading with other teams and giving up more and more picks, or building through young talent in the draft? I'm telling you, we will be sick this year seeing Goff and Lofton and Mayo and others tearing it up across the league.

they said the same for moss and we see how that turned out.....

I am not a huge Shockey fan but can someone please tell me when was the last stud we drafted in the second round??? all i remeber is D.Henderson= WR who cant catch
Bullocks= FS who finds a way to piss me off every game.
R. Harper= decent SS

just based on those three i dont mind trading a second for a top 5 TE.... and trust me i dont like Shockey ,being a diehard Seminoles fan i cant stand him, but realize that this kid would make our offense even better if that was possible.

OH and he dated Vida Guerra lol what a LUCKY man

How many of you anti-Shockey people wanted Greg Olsen in the first last year? Because that's flip-flopping. Our defense needed just as much help last year as it does this year, and our tight ends needed just as much help last year as they did this year. So not wanting to give up a #41 now for a proven beast who can do it all, while hoping for an unproven rookie who can't block at #27 is inconsistent and makes no sense. I understand Shockey's got attitude problems, but we cannot automatically pencil those in here. He may or may not be a troublemaker, so let's err on the side of optimism for once?

All that being said, I don't want Shockey if it's going to cost #41. But I also didn't want Olsen last year.

I guess what I'm saying is -- everyone make sure you're consistent with what you want, instead of looking for reasons to criticize what the front office MIGHT be doing.

Please do not trade our second rounder for any offensive player.

As I wrote on another thread, I can't have a problem with Shockey's personality if Payton doesn't either. He had coached him for years and knows him perfectly.

But we need to get a linebacker and a corner to possibly start next year. We can say now that free agency came and went because there are no solid starters available now.

I would prefer to wait until draft day, and as we expect if at #10 Ellis, Dorsey and Gholston are not available, then I would prefer to switch first rounders instead of giving up our second.

Another thing, since the draft may bring some surprises, I will wait and see and possibly trade down, and after then make an other offer for Shockey if we really want him.

I know most people are dissapointed, but I don't want the saints to make moves for the sake of making them. Gay at a high salary makes no sense to me. Giving up a first day on an offensive player either.

I agree. There will be too much defensive talent available in the 2nd for us to trade that pick. We need to use our first two '08 picks on defense.

Getting Shockey,

Pros:
He can be an All-Prowl TE.
He can be the #2 receiver we need.
He is fiery and passionate.
He can blow open an Offense.
He likes and respects Payton.
He'll finally be with a very good QB. (Eli has come along but face it, he struggled before)

Cons:
He's a little bit of a hot head.
He can be controversial.
He does not play Defense.
He will be expensive.
We need a alot on Defense; a big body DT, a legitmate starting CB, a upgrade at LB.
He will be coming off an injury.

Now, pick the lesser of two evils. Do we turn away from a Pro-Bowl TE, that will make our Offense explode OR do we give up picks for what we need to build a Defense that's not the laughing stock of the league?

There goes Payton trying to force his players to our system , Shockey is trouble . Note when he was not playing the Giants were better bad attitude and very cockey.

shockey is also in an unhappy position at NY

he doesnt care for eli and he hates coughlin

brees is a top knotch QB and WILL get shockey the ball, shockey has chemistry with payton

my opinion, if we get him it will be great, if we dont get him i wont be upset about it either.

also it would be nice to have someone with a fire on our offense... someone needs to chew some tail out there. the saints of late have seemed to be quite "soft" more finesse. shockey is a guy who will bust you in the mouth, i like that.

Not worth it locker room cancer. Can address TE in draft Keller from Purdue.

If the rumors are true that the Saints have offered their 2nd round pick, then I think the Saints are planning on trading down in the draft to get that pick back....unless Ellis unexpectedly falls to 10.

I don't think from what Mort said that we are close to a deal with Shockey. All he said was that the Giants weren't real interested in trading Shockey, but that they were entertaining phone calls about it. Then he went on to SPECULATE that MAYBE the most interesting phone call came from the Saints because Payton knows Shockey and he used to work there. I think it's baloney and a lot of people here are getting worked up into a tizzy over nothing.
