I don't feel sorry for him. Look he gave up on the team. Things where going to be hard after Drew left and he quit. So yeah, I lost a little bit of respect for him.

Guys like Belichik and Tomlin stuck with there teams after there SB winning QB's left and I just respect the hell out of that.

Still grateful for what he did for the city/team and always will be.

Not feeling sorry for SP in the slightest, this is all happening because of his actions.

Just like Belichick is now finding out that Tom Brady might have been pretty good, SP is finding out what life as a head coach without a first-ballot HOF QB is like...

I dont really care, but i voted yes anyways. Watching the Denver games, it further adds validity to the notion that “it’s not the coach, IT’S THE QB” that dictates wins & losses in this league. Time & time again, Russ simply failed to see the open guy. Or he’d panic & throw a yolo balls to his receivers.

Straight up, Russell Wilson is tattered husk of his of his formal self. He was never a high IQ QB. Wilson was just a random big play improviser. I mean, this is pretty much what killed him in SEA. He’s never been a who functions well within a structured O. That’s not exactly on Sean Payton.

Right, but if Payton is the guru that I thought he was, he should have seen that in Wilson and possibly not taken the job. Of course, he could just be playing out the string so they can jettison Russ and draft or sign a replacement.... In my opinion Sean's hubris led him to believe he could fix Russ.....and maybe he can't. A system coach like CSP who is supposed to be the most clever guy in the room should have seen the possible landmine in a QB who "cooks" up fly by the seat of your pants offense and considered it. He didn't. Drew was the pinnacle of a guy who ran an offense the way it should be ran, there will never be another Drew.

Denver is locked in on Sean and I don't think he could go 0-16 and have it cost him his job. I love Payton and there's no doubt he helped change the fortunes of the Saints. He and Drew (and many others) breathed life back into Saints football when more than a few folks wrote them off.

Again, I love Sean but I am excited for a future without him. Allen may not be the long term answer, but now that he's had an off-season to work on that D and get a pretty good quarterback for the offense he's not quite looking like who we thought he was either. Dennis Allen is now a little more loose and can operate with a bit more edge and it will get better if they continue to win. If the offense just starts clicking a little bit - this D could take us to a Superbowl. Under Allen. Jeez....talk about Pigs flying...

I didn't read this whole thread, but I do not wish ill will on anyone.

It is clear to all of us that Payton and Brees were a good combo here. He came into a good nucleus of a team. He doesn't have that in Denver. From the highlights, the play calls remind me of SP's early days with us. Wilson is not Brees and Denver's defense is nowhere near as opportunistic as our defense was. SP's play calls are innovative, but now and then they just fail. You can't make everyone happy, or less innovative and you lack creativity.

Yes .
Surprised by the high percentage of No's.
I read most of the posts. A pretty lot of bitter feelings. My thought is centered around what euphoria Payton brought to New Orleans and every Saints fan. And for how long our team was relevant. Under Payton.
Yes -- we had down years with him. But it wasn't always his fault. And never ONLY his fault. He had his weaknesses as head coach. And we let him have it here on
saintsreport.com when he showed those weaknesses. Even called for his head.
But the man repeatedly turned the Saints around. And except for being robbed by refs/Goodell, the Saints and Payton should have two more Super Bowl trophies -- at least.
Did Payton do us wrong by the way he left the city? Perhaps. But the coach is human.
I don't hold anything against him. For what he brought to New Orleans and the fans, and because he is an upstanding man, I want the best for him. I will never forget our glory days that lasted years. We owe Payton for that period. And yes -- I care if he has a rough time in Denver. I want to see him succeed there.

I don't hate him but I don't feel bad for him. For someone who doesn't like to say much, he sure says a lot of dumbheaded, billboard material things and seems to be trying really hard to prove something to somebody. And doing a really bad job at it, by the way.

In 2019 when the rumor was, he is going to Dallas, and he signed the extension and gave an interview about how much he loved the City and Franchise. (BS) Then from the moment he retired, he spoke publicly about returning to coaching, even citing teams that were in (arguably) good situations as HIS top choices, such as the Chargers and Cowboys. I don’t understand why everyone has just been cool with this, seems extremely scummy. If he was burnt out, I think it would have been more than a year to recharge his batteries. As fans we do not owe him anything for doing his job. He was under contract he owed the team. Unlike players Coaches contracts are fully guaranteed, unless you quit. So yes, I feel like a dumped lover. I hope he goes 0-17 not just for the draft pick but I'm PO'ed
I do believe his stint in Denver will tarnish his legacy.

I thought he hinted that he wanted to do TV? (as well???)

After they go 0-17. Draft picks before well wishes. I'm a Saints fan first. It's not bitter, it's business. You hoping he does well is the same to me as rooting for the Falcons because, by golly Onyemata and Ellis were swell guys when they were here. You can completely miss me with that. I have nothing against Payton but I want that pick to be so high it's knocking on the door of the first round!

I'm not bitter. I'm a Saints fan. I want what helps the Saints above all else. Payton is a grown man and definitely feels the same about his new team. He'd 100% want the same if the shoe was on the other foot. The only thing odd here is people hoping he does well when it directly affects the Saints. You want to fanboy for Denver, fine, hit I-10 west then turn up somewhere else.

I mean, in the grand scheme of things, he’s a guy having a hard time on his new job. There are opportunities for improvement and it’s still early in the season.
And, maybe he wanted a rebuild project. I think he walked into this one with his eyes open, understanding that the Broncos were not going to be an immediate contender. Additionally, he took a job in the same division where two other starting QBs are light years better than his.

And he has a former Super Bowl-winning Pro-Bowl QB who best years were in Seattle and sort of came out of his prime years about 3-4 years ago and can be categorized as maybe decent-to-good in his best games. Payton's Broncos, even if they do improve substantially (and they likely will) over the next year or so, well simultaneously, I don't see either Kansas City or L.A. Chargers regressing either because both of their MVP-CALIBER QB's will continue to evolve and if anything, become more deadlier, potent offensive weapons. He's in a much, much tougher, competitive division than what he usually had to deal with and contend against as it related to other NFC South teams throughout most of his Saints HC tenure. Aside from playing against a rapidly declining, past his prime Tom Brady Bucs, the closest thing to a HOF QB Payton had to contend with, constantly devise schemes against for over a decade-long period was Falcons' Matt Ryan in the NFC South
