Evidence for God (1 Viewer)

Actually, I went with some friends as a little boy to a Baptist Church that was right behind Slidell High School. They took me to Sunday School and the teacher was busy adding up how old the earth was based on some OT passage telling how old people were. I'll never, ever forget that they were proving that the world was definitively created 5000 years BC.

Even at 6 or 7, that seemed rEdiculous.

We must keep in mind that there is a distinct difference between Creationists (just about any religion that believes in a god) and Young Earth Creationists (those that believe the earth is only 6000 years old). YEC are typically evangelical christians that are extreme fundamentalists. Whatever the bible says is absolute truth (unless they don't want it to be).

The question remains unanswered: If there is no creator, then why is there something rather than nothing?

I'll bite. I'll accept the premise of an original intelligent "creator" provided you're willing to explain exactly why the creator must be as described by the Christian Bible. Your next post in this thread must address this.

Besides the fact that I already believe in God and don't need proof, when my friend's mom had a tumor the size of a tennis ball that disappeared over night, and the doctors scattered everywhere trying to find an answer, we all knew it was God working miracles.

Why the Christian God and not Ganesh?

Why are those miracles not performed on every single human being that ever had or has cancer? Working in mysterious ways is not good enough either.
Great question. I belive it is because the devil makes us suffer. In Revelations 2:10 Jesus says, "I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you...Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life." What Jesus is saying is that when bad things happen to us it is the devil who is causing harm, only to test us. The devil does prevail in taking people's lives. Personally one of the strongest Christians I've ever known died out of the blue. The autopsy showed no reason of why he died. I believe that it was the devil taking away one of God's strongest followers.

so, the devil gives people cancer to test them??

that seems fair :idunno:

God is considered all-powerful, omniscient, and omnipresent in the Christian tradition. There is no duality in the Christian tradition. Bad things happen because God allows them to happen. Period. This is an unassailable position.

Satan gave my mother terminal melanoma? Cool story bro.

You understand this makes your god either cruel, ignorant, or weak?

I'm sorry, but you're freakin' crazy. The devil is not the cause of our problems; people are. And nature, of course. To blame all your sorrows on an invisible horned goat-man is ignorant, childish, and flat out insane.

I agree. Historical evidence suggests that the conception of Satan isn't even original tradition, but Zoroastrian influence coming from the Jewish community in exile during the Babylonian period. This makes sense because Zoroastrianism is a true duality, of good and evil. But Christianity is not. Evil can only happen through the omission of action by God. God has ultimate, final say. Therefore anything that occurs, occurs with God's tacit consent. Including evil.

This website is awesome. It is designed to answer questions from athiest and non-believers, and does a really good job at that. I will Link you to the scientific part but you can click around, good stuff.

Thanks for the laugh, but that doesn't come close to beating out the creationist museum. Nothing funnier than cavemen riding dinosaurs 7000 years ago.

That way of calculating it is presumptuous because it assumes that a very short time passed between the creation of Adam and Eve and the Fall. We don't know how long they lived in the garden (thousands of years, maybe more?) before the temptation. It also doesn't tell us how much time passed between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2. (see Gap Theory)

As if there was some confusion in my mind about the earth being created in 7 days 5,000, 500,000 or even 50,000,000 years ago.

Irony of ironies, I think that photo was taken at the creation museum here in Pensacola. I've never been, but I've been told they have Jesus riding gentle dinosaurs and Adam and Eve frolicking about with T-Rex babies.

Good times.

If God and his compadres created heaven and earth and, presumably, the devil; and they created and control everything, isn't this argument a cop out? It's like saying God told the devil to be mean to you, but it wasn't really God's doing.

I used to hold my little brother's arms when we would get in fights and make him punch himself because my dad told me I wasn't allowed to hit him. It worked for me at 5 or 7, but it's not good enough for God.
