The addition of RAW is likely why they think they can raise the rates. I'll never understand it, but it's a big IP and now you have to have Netflix to see it.

I personally struggle finding things to watch on Netflix. Most of their own series are bad and most of what I watch on there is old shows that I never got around to watching that end up on Netflix.

But, I have to keep it because I can't get my wife to stop watching their terrible Korean romance shows. And my wife and daughter watch some anime on Netflix.

Hey, those Korean romance shows are NOT bad! A lot of the Korean content across genres is really pretty good. I especially like their reality shows. There's something much more genuine about them versus American reality TV.

I just wish they would pay Korean Americans or English speaking Koreans to do the voice over. I feel some stuff is lost in translation. Annnnd, if we're being honest, it's distracting when you can tell it's Ken from California doing the voice over.

I think Netflix anime shows are akin to Chick-fil-A. It can be really good, but it's not where you go when you want fried chicken. It's where you go when you want CFA. You can get good anime on Netflix, but it's not where you go when you want anime.

Yeah, you can usually count of Netflix having the biggest hits of the year and then a few other things, but if you have more niche interests they are kind of lacking.I'm big Gundam fan, but they have comparatively little compared to CR.

If you're somebody that's really into obscure isekais, or shojo stuff, or like 80s and 90s retro OVAs, Netflix is very lacking. They're essentially anime for the casual market, not the hardcore.

Then it gets worse when she utters those three, dreaded words to me: “Babe, come sit.”

I am lucky that my wife doesn't try to make me watch those shows. But, I do often wake up on Saturday and Sunday mornings with them on the bedroom TV.

I think Hulu tends to have the older stuff, and I actually like the older stuff like Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, but we also have Crunchy Roll for all the new stuff. My daughter in particular has consumed just about every anime made since the mid-80s so all she has left to watch is the straight from Japan brand new stuff which Hulu doesn't have.

But Netflix has some of their own anime which you can't get other places.

Yes. They have a few things of their own like Arcane, which are pretty popular, but it's not seen as the highest quality stuff. Or at least that's what my daughter tells me.

Lol. They are certainly better than their American counterparts, but still not my thing. I'm not into romance shows or reality TV.

But, I'm surrounded by a daughter and a wife who listen to J-Pop (luckily not into K-Pop yet), watch anime, read manga, read manhwa, read Korean light novels, watch Japanese historical dramas, and watch Korean romances. Sometimes it's just overload for me.

Oh yeah, it's completely mainstream now with younger generations. And also becoming more mainstream with older people, although not on the same level.

As an old school weeb, things are awesome now as far as access goes. Sure beats having to order everything on VHS back in the day, with max 3 or 4 episodes per tape.

Just like anything else, there are levels to it. That article I was talking about earlier made a distinction between casual and hardcore anime fans, and noted that while the casual audience has exploded (which benefits services like Netflix or Hulu) the hardcore audience (ones watching more obscure stuff and much more regularly) hasn't grown at the same rate, which has hurt Crunchyroll.

Crunchyroll is apparently having major behind the scenes issues since Sony purchased them and merged them with Funimation. There was an article a couple of months ago about how dysfunctional it had become and how they were struggling more since Netflix and Disney+ started getting into the anime game.

One of the major takeaways of the article that they made the decision to do NO promotional stuff for Dandadan at all. Then it became the biggest hit of the year and they looked like idiots because most people were watching it on Netflix.

I still keep CR because they carry more niche and retro titles, though.

Yea, I saw that whole dust up on DanDaDan. That is simply the best anime of 2024. CR really screwed up with that. Also, I can't wait for July..
