Fix Netflix (1 Viewer)

This article popped up in my browser feed. I'm sure that's a coincidence. Anyway, the author spells out some theories on what is ailing Netflix, if anyone wants to read them. I'll post the bullet points.

We have a Netflix subscription, but my wife uses it the most. Our youngest uses it, but not as much as her. I've never used it. I'm not a binge-watcher. I'm not the type that can sit and watch TV for hours; I even get antsy watching Saints and LSU games, wanting to go do something else. It's a sickness, I know.

➽ It’s the Content

➽ Competition Matters

➽ Or Maybe It’s Just Old-Fashioned Stubbornness

➽ So What Now?

Netflix is the one streaming service I've never even tried. I've given the others at least an initial look and stuck with some for awhile. I don't even have a desire to get Netflix. I don't miss seeing some of their content, even if some of it is attractive. Right now, I have too many services and plan on stripping them down. My dad has YTTV that I watch, I have D+, P+, and HBOmax. Those will do for now but I'm really thinking of dropping P+ before I get hooked on the new Star Trek series coming in May. Oh, and Prime, I'll be keeping that no matter what.
To me, Paramount+ is the best one out all of them. Yes, only $6 per month with ads but me and the wife can deal with that. Netflix, Disney and HBO Max are way out there for us but "we share with our grown kids" those 3 so we do not pay as much. Yes, Netflix has gotten old and not much new stuff to keep us going. But we do not pay fully for it. about 1/3 the cost we pay for it.

Pluto TV, Xumox TV, Roku TV, Tubi, Crackle, IMDB ( there are a few more)all use this model and they are free. They don't use a dvr function, but you can stream on demand, and you can FF and REW, but you can't skip through the ads.. If you have never used any of them, they work great if you are looking for ways around Pay Streaming apps. There is a ton of free stuff among them.
I really like Pluto tv, and I’ve used most of those at one time or another.

Pluto is very good. If i didn't have those bootleg apps on my Firestick, that would be the app i would use the most. I use it from time to time. My son and i could sit and watch Fail Army channel all day...

Netflix had 8 of the top 10 streaming programs last week.

Well yeah, they should. They have the largest install base of any streaming platform by quite a bit by virtue of being the original big dog. But that isn't relevant to why they're now hemmoraging subscribers, leadership is freaking out very publicly, and why their stock is tanking.

But even with that said, put no stock in any numbers anyone reports for streaming "ratings". The truth is only the streaming companies know how many people are watching their stuff and for how long, and they heavily manipulate that data when they make it public (Netflix will tell you 40 million people watched something when they mean 40 million people watched two minutes of it.). All third party organizations are using voodoo methods to arrive at their numbers for streaming. Even Nielsen.

Going back to my earlier post, lots of creators on the animation side of things have said they found it impossible to get actual accurate data about who was watching and for how long from Netflix. If the people who make it are in the dark, I assure you no third party company is all that accurate.

Other than Bojack (cancelled), their Marvel stuff (cancelled), and some stand up, I haven't seen the appeal for years and dropped my subscription 2018 (ish)

I didn't read the whole thread, but I'd imagine that from an American point of view Netflix is broken because it doesn't solely cater to American sensibilities. That's something I actually really love about Netflix. It's the only streaming service where I get watch pop culture for other countries. Forget waiting for Hollywood to make the American version of a foreign show and screw it up royally. Without Netflix, we would have eventually gotten an Americanized version of Squid Game that totally lacked any of the soul that the original version had. I like the original Korean, Nigerian, Indian, and British content Netflix has.

Netflix is a for a global market and that doesn't always sit well with American tastes and sensibilities. I'm okay with that.

Netflix cuts different deals in every market it operates in. Netflix in Euorpe or Asia is completely different than Netflix in America. So American Netflix is specifically American.

Looks like even employees are starting to lose faith in the company's direction. Not shocking when so much tech compensation is tied up in stock options and the stock goes down the toilet.

Has Paramout+ added a queue or a My List? I watched the stuff I wanted to on there and then canceled it because they had no queue. I like to have a list of what I want to watch. I don't want to have to search the entire site for something every time I start it up. I have no idea why they launched without a queue. Unless they had one and I could find it. In which case, I'm old and their UI sucks. :)

Yep, They do have a My List. That is what we use.

Well...duh.

But because Netflix makes or gets the rights to content from countries around the world, they can incorporate it into as you say "American Netflix". Anyone arguing that Netflix doesn't have huge tentpoles is ignoring programming that wasn't made with Americans in mind. For example, the Spanish hit series, Money Heist.

There's a lot of great international programming that's overlooked on your specifically American Netflix, content we don't get if Netflix soley catered to American sensibilities...which is what I said.

I loved the 3% and the Barrier (la valla) on Netflix. They were not made for "American TV", same with The Rain. I enjoyed those shows. and it helps that they were all dubbed in english, as i prefer that over subtitles.

They are not hemorrhaging subscribers.
200,000 of 222,000,000 is less than .001%. If they indeed end up losing 2,000,000 subscriptions the next quarter, that still is less than 1%. Obviously it may be a trend, and they could continue to lose subscriptions, but there are not dead quite yet.

Their stock is tanking (or was tanking, the sharp drop came on the 20th as we hit the highest rate of inflation in 40 years amid worries the Fed will act more aggressively) not because Netflix execs are freaking out publicly (they all have their corporate parachutes, they'll be ok); many stocks are going down due to global economic conditions. Myself, I have a vey safe portfolio and in the last couple months I'm down $100K. If anything, it may be investors who are freaking out and cashing out because of the global economic conditions.

Tech compensation in stocks is reserved for very high ups in management. Stock options for the common folk means you can buy stock at a not-so discounted price.
