Florida Principal Out After Viewing Of Michelangelo's 'David' Upsets Parents (1 Viewer)

Not to take away from the subject but this makes me think of my Mom.
When my parents were still living they were lucky enough to take a trip to Italy, not something they would have thought financially possible after raising such a large family.
So Mom comes home gushing over all they experienced and adds that even though she raised 6 boys she had never seen so many penises.
Yep, and tbh, I’ve never really understood why we’re “ashamed” of our bodies. Not saying we should all walk around naked, but penis, vagina and sex etc aren’t bad words and the arts of human bodies should be a normal form of human expression. If you (general you) believe God created us, then you’d think his creation is good and beautiful. My thoughts anyway.

A total of one person claimed it was pornographic. Yet, here we are.

That total of one person (it was actually 3 parents) resulted in the firing of a principal (she was given the choice of resigning or terminatin), for some dranconian white christian nationalist BS "procedure or protocol" not being followed.....yet, here we are.....

Sure if you are going to ignore facts such as that she wasn't fired and it has been stated that, according to her employers, this was the culmination of multiple issues with her

I wouldn’t call the procedures or protocols draconian. There should be procedures and protocols for notifying parents of things their children learn in school. The devil is in the details though. What qualifies is ultimately debatable. I’d say kids seeing the statue of David doesn’t, but a small percentage of parents might disagree.

Regardless, I think too much is being made of that and not enough attention is on the fact that the principal wasn’t fired strictly for this issue. No one should lose their job over one or even a few notifications violations.

On a related note, we received a letter and opened last night, from our childs HS in regards to "required summer reading"

Prior to the letter, teachers assigned the kids "summer reading"

As of now, "required summer reading" selections will be left up to the kids/parents to decide.

Basically a " cant get mad at us" approach - CYA.

My oldest also went to the "books no longer required" to read link ( from my memory as she read aloud )

Diary of Anne Frank
To Kill a Mockingbird
Clockwork Orange
1984
Charlottes Web

there was a bunch more that my oldest was like " Read...read....read...omg these are all "banned" now?!??!?!"

The funny part? my youngest is reading Fahrenheit 451 RIGHT NOW. LOLOL.

Amazing Bradbury wrote this in 1953! Some of these writers have a "Nostradamus" feel to them, no?

Yep, those were pretty much required reading when I was in school. The only one if those I’ve never read is Clockwork Orange. Or maybe I did read it but don’t remember a thing from that one.

She was given the choice to re-sign or she would be terminated, whom exactly is ignoring facts here? Also smear campaigns are common practice, surprises me not at all....

So, you’re saying the school made up the violations in this case? I mean it’s possible, but seems far-fetched to me. If you’re firing or forcing the resignation for cause, you’d better have your ducks in a row, otherwise the school board leaves themselves vulnerable to an expensive lawsuit. If there were multiple violations, of which this latest one just happened to be the controversial one, then there’s apparently much more to the story.

Actually my position is that we don't know enough to make a judgement unless some of you can prove that she didn't actually have other issues in her file.

Something else that is being ignored is that the school had to have strict, clear policies and procedures for disciplining or terminating an employee. If those procedures weren't followed, the better course of action would have been to force them to fire her and sue then for breaching their own policies and procedures.

Yeah, I’d say the smart approach would have been to force them to fire her and if she has a good legal team, she could sue the shirt out of the school board. If she has a history tho, then maybe resigning was the right thing to do.

If it's anything like my daughter's school, it's not that they're being removed from required reading lists because of their content. They're just being replaced with more updated works. I've noticed that a lot of what we consider classics are no longer used as much.

One of these things is not like the others

What's the problem with Charlotte's Web?

And fwiw, if a parent wants their kid to sit out of a particular lesson because of whatever content, they should have that option. It's really not that hard to have a kid sit out a given class on a given day. The parent gets their wish and the teachers can go about their usual lesson plan without silly distractions.

Updated versions in what sense?
