Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore... (1 Viewer)

Do these ships have recorders like aircraft to record instruments and pilot/captains orders?

Yes, they should all have a VDR (Voyage Data Recorder).

The Port of Baltimore is the busiest US port for car imports. The post is also huge for agricultural machinery and produce. Certainly ships will be re-routed to other ports, but here we go again with supply chain price increases

What's worse is that the Longshoreman's contracts expire in September and if they go on strike just wait and see what a mess there is.

The port will be re-opened long before then. The bridge will take at least a year though.

"The container ship Dali was not being piloted by its own crew, but by local pilots who are used specifically to avoid accidents like the one that occurred early Tuesday morning."

isn't that what they do here in Louisiana, in the Miss River?

That headline makes it sound like the warning was before it left the port. It should have said that they sent out a mayday warning when it lost power just before it hit the bridge.

Basically every port has Pilots specifically trained for local conditions that give orders to the helmsman on where to go to keep the ship at the proper speed and in the channel. The captain can override the pilot but rarely do.

Yeah, not sure but I know I had the belief that no local pilots were aboard, so I thought I'd point out that there were.

There were actually 2 pilots on board which someone early this morning said that was not uncommon for night operations there.
