We have a Colombian friend and she told us that twice Sonic got her shake order wrong. She got banana twice, but ordered vanilla. When she said the word “vanilla”, it sounded just like banana. “Banelna”. She could not make the “v” sound matter how much she tried.

Recognizing silent h’s (hacer) and different interpretations of double L (typical y and Buenos Aires ch). Hearing link words like que and a. Remembering gender. V’s being B’s. Many fewer double consonants.

The silent h’s were tough for my mother-in-law in learning English. She was from Honduras and English word that started with “hu” and pronounced “hue” she pronounced as “y”. Yuman, yumongous, yumid.

The same went for my mom when my parents moved to the US from Colombia in '73. My dad had the advantage of having European parents who fled to Colombia during WW2, so he grew up speaking English at home/Spanish at school... He speaks both languages w/ zero accent for both, my mom on the other hand still has a somewhat noticeable accent in English even though she's totally fluent...
