Future WR core (13 Viewers)

If he wants to keep playing, he needs to do this.

My concerns when he came to the NFL was his RBS at 2.59 which is well below the average top 25 WR which in 2019 was 2.82 and 2020 2.76. He really needs to get to the 203-205 lbs range and he'd be in the average RBS range for a top 25 WR. I haven't completed my spreadsheet the last couple years, but I might do it this year to see how much has changed. The best WRs in the league all have a RBS in the range around 2.80 with a few outliers who are below it.

Relative Body Size is Weight in pounds divided by height in inches.

I'm honestly not sure that Olave is the kind of guy that can really add bulk or add as much muscle as required to get in the 200 lbs range, but it does seem like he needs to get there for his own safety.

But I do think the neck strengthening is interesting. I didn't think about it until Underhill mentioned it but it does make sense. IIRC a lot of the concussion Olave has had in the NFL were the result of him falling on his back and hitting the back of his head on the turf. Strengthening the neck would help with that. But I also think he needs to wear a QB helmet designed to protect from the back of the head hitting the turn and/or a guardian cover. His latest concussion was just from a hit and he needs to add bulk for that situation, but I also think that had more to do with him coming back too soon from his last concussion than anything else.

But under these circumstances I'm not sure you can justify giving Olave a long term contract. Maybe pick up the 5th year option and then consider a trade if the right offer comes in.

Agreed, the neck strengthening would really help him out. Right now he has a thin pencil neck.

I really like Tre Harris and Xavier Restrepo. Others I am watching for middle and late round picks.
Dont'e Thornton JR.
Ja'Corey Brooks
Justin Lockhart
Elijhah Badger
Jaylin Noel
Tai Felton
Nick Nash
Ricky White lll
Luke Grimm

Possession receiver's aren't the FOTM type of receiver right now. It's field stretchers with separation. It fits into the whole narrative of a vertical passing attack with a scrambling QB that can run the ball once the defense is stretched.

That's not Derek Carr nor am I making an argument against. Just saying that the odds of possession receiver falling in the draft are currently better then the odds of a field stretching WR falling in the draft.
Yeah arguably, for this offense, the wheels come off w/ out Taysom and or a downfield threat. That speed element is important. We’ll have plenty of it next year w/ guys getting healthy and improving but w/ our run vs pass splits usually in the 53/47 range, I’d say a RB might be more valuable and cheaper to get.

A legit 3 headed monster would be insane in this offense. Once a safety creeps up, if Carr has proven anything, it’s he’ll put a deep ball where it needs to be.

W/ the way Carr and this offense is playing w/ out an elite #1 it makes you wonder if we truly need to spend high Dollars/draft capital on a WR. Carr looks comfy spreading it around vs when he’s got Thomas or Olave unhappy w/ their # of touches.

The year he had Adams he got him the ball, but they didn’t win many games.

OL, RB, TE seem to be the best areas to get return on investment

Restrepo makes plays ever time I see him play. I'm guessing he's more of a slot guy but even if that's what he is, I'll take it. I wonder what round he is projected for? I'm guessing mid-rounds, but if he runs well at the combine he could shoot up.

No amount of neck strengthening would have prevented a concussion from the dirty shot he took against Carolina. Not sure about the Tampa play either.

Not that I have anything against neck strengthening...

How good is a core of Olave, Shaheed, MVS, Pettis. I think they have potential. A lot falls on Olave returning from the latest concussion, staying healthy and avoiding concussions. Pair that with Juwan finally being fully healthy and having his best game there is some hope for the future. I wouldn’t overlook adding a WR in the draft if one of the top ones fell.
Olave probably should retire. MVS is 30 years old and Pettis is 29. Both are journeymen. I do not see any of the 3 as players we can count on as core members for the future.

I think we’re good at oline. We need edge & wr help badly. TE also doesn’t seem like much of a need. Edge gets us a the pressure we need on defense without having to rely on blitzes to bring pressure. As for offense the way our team is setup does Carr a disservice. We need fast route running receivers who can win routes with 5-10 yrds. Adding size to that equation is a plus.
Sending out 2 smallish framed receivers and 2 mediocre TE on routes puts a risk adverse Carr behind the 8ball before the ball is even snapped.

Just my 2cents

I still don't think that was really a dirty hit against Carolina. The guy even pulled up and even stopped before hit hit him and Olave's momentum ran him right into the guy. It wasn't really even that hard of a hit. I'm not sure what he was supposed to do, choose not to tackle or move out of the way? And yes, I know the NFL fined him. The NFL loves to throw out fines to pretend that they care about player safety.

Anyway, it was just a hard hit and it probably would not have caused a concussion had he not come back too soon from the prior concussion.

Bad Gm's draft early in the 1st round receivers. Receiver is the most dependent position in all of football.

We can find good receivers who can contribute day 1 in the 3rd or later rounds. There is so many fast guys out there with good hands. You do not need to waste early picks on 1 nor sign some free agent that commands top money.

Truthfully a tight end is more valuable than a receiver. In pay they are not but they are so athletic and big boys usually. Jimmy G, Kittle, Shockey, Gonzalez, Sharpe, Kelce, Taysom, etc. Tight end can do way more than a receiver.

How many times have we heard from the announcer or over the loud speaker call an average tight end named Alge Crumpler. Thats just 1 example.

We likely will draft a WR #1. Especially if McMillan is there. Which I doubt he is bc we will be selecting around 12-15
