NFL Draft Get ready. I think we’re trading up. 💯 (13 Viewers)

Trading up for anything other than a QB before you have one is bad business.... not gonna have another Brees to sign...

So our best route is through the draft...

We are not a destination choice among FA QBs

Trading up is usually a bad idea. Statistical studies show that teams generally should trade down, not trade up. The exception is a quarterback on whom a team has a solid first-round grade. This year, I think only one quarterback, Cameron Ward, will be picked high.

One never says never, but the Saints should stand pat at nine or possibly even drop down a few spots. And I also don't favor Will Campbell at nine, much less an earlier pick after trading up. We have many needs. Let the draft come to us. And because we have so many needs, I love the idea of four picks in rounds three and four--and would like to see us pick up another three.

In summary, I don't see us trading up in round one. But I would not be shocked to see us trading up in round two or round three to get a certain player.

I'd trade back not up. 3 top 100 picks + 3 we already possess would go a long way to replenish this roster.
Exactly this. We're an aging team with a lot of holes and in bad need of depth. We need youth, and a lot of it. Most picks past the first half of the first round are crapshoots anyway. Get (and keep) as many picks as possible to spin the wheel as many times as we can.

We CANNOT do our normal thing of falling in love with one guy and trading away the world to get him (*cough* Payton Turner *cough* Marcus Davenport *cough*). Trade down if you must, load up on picks, and swing away.

We have plenty of spots for our picks. It’s very likely Campbell will be there at 9. Historically we have traded up, but we have a new coach and possibly a new draft philosophy
Correct. And what did we do last season at 14? We had a trade-back set up if Bowers fell and when he went a pick ahead of us, we stayed put.

I think the trade-ups in the past were a combination of having a pretty loaded roster ost years and already fielding a contender. The odd-out was the trade to acquire Penning and Olave. That one was llikely made because we really believed in the two players. If Penning would've hit and Olave didn't have the concussion issues (and MT would've stayed productive and on the team) we wouldn't be complaining.

I believe we'll stay put at #9 this draft with a trade-back possible if there's a team that wants to move up and can't find a deal to move up higher than #9. Really only see a couple players being available at #9 that teams might be willing to tade up for. Jeanty if available and/or one of the OTs. Unless one of the QBs actually do fall to #9, which seems unlikely to me.

If they do, they better not miss this time.

When you trade draft capital to move up and you whiff, it's a double whammy of failure.

God I hope not. Trading up for a guard would be crippling for this franchise.
I don’t understand this sentiment. If Campbell has the potential to be a dominant starter at G for years, why would it be bad to take him in the top 10 regardless if it’s for a trade up or not? K/P would be the only guaranteed nos at top 10 imo.

I’ve seen plenty of people say it’s a bad idea to draft a G high, and I just don’t understand that thinking. Getting a pro bowl G at 9 that always opens running lanes and keeps defenders out of the QB’s face seems like a good pick to me.

Is G what I want the most out of a top 10 pick? Of course not. Other positions have more value if filled by a dominant player, however, if a G is the bpa and every other position seems to be a lesser caliber player, I’m going G all the way.

If we are going to get a guard, Tyler Booker from 'Bama is the stud we want at guard. He's like the machine that drilled under the English Channel...he makes wide-assed holes. Look at all the long runs that Milroe had last year, especially against LSU. He followed Booker on a lot of them.
I'm far from being an Alabama fan, but I can recognize talent when I see it.
I also think someone is going to get a steal with Milroe; not as a QB, but they will convince him to be a RB/wildcat QB. He can't throw worth poo poo, but sure can run.

The hole clearing part sounds great, but hopefully he moves faster than that tunnel boring machine did. Just a bit of levity.
