Getting Taysom Hill involved on offense. (1 Viewer)

I would love to see him take a handoff on a jet sweep or a toss and then throw the ball. I mean, this is practically unprecedented at least in the modern NFL, because when has a modern backup QB been athletic enough to get a carry? And actually expected by the defense to run the ball?

Even better? Take the handoff on a stretch play, then throw a lateral back across the field to Drew as he finishes carrying out the bootleg. Drew catches the lateral and launches downfield.

I mean, Payton has to have all kinds of gadgets drawn up for Hill, and is probably saving them for critical points in games or during the season when we really need them. This is going to be fun.

Jim Jensen 2.0 the former Dolphins who played from 81-92. He was the 3rd string QB, and he was used as a RB, WR and TE and the special team captain.

heck just having him as a decoy out there will cause the defense to hesitate, they have to respect his speed. i bet he could catch well, he seemed fluid in catching those kickoffs.. fake sweep or just running deep would take the CB and likely a S with him..

look at when they put him in under center. it caused a wasted timeout, that can be really helpful in the second half. less timeouts at the end of the game...
A decoy is definitely possible. During our last game against the Falcons, Hill was brought in as a slot WR on one play, and I noticed the defense looking confused and trying to find someone to guard him.

I have been wondering about ways that the Saints may be able to get Hill involved on the offense because of his superb speed and athleticism. To this point, no one really knows if he could be a viable pass-catcher, but there may another way...

The jet sweep.

Line Hill up in the slot or out wide and bring him in motion across the formation. The Saints could then hand it off to the RB after faking the jet sweep, hand it off to Hill on the jet sweep, or have Hill stay behind the LOS and throw the ball.

All 3 options have the potential for success.

Teams will honor Hill’s speed on the fake sweep, which could put a LB or S out of position for the RB run in the opposite direction.

If they do not, hand the ball to Hill and if he gets the edge, it’s trouble for the defense.

If the defense gets overly aggressive, Hill can throw the ball better than any RB or WR in the game on the option pass.

Hill can help without even touching the ball. Someone that big with that speed and acceleration has to get in the defense's heads.

i'm really hoping we see it this weekend. I think Payton's waiting for a bigger stage to deploy his new weapon.

Most recent one I can think of is Mike Vick in Philly.

Hill is a very unique and talented player. Many fans believe that he will not develop into a “real” QB, but I disagree... he showed improvement just during the preseason games, and he also showed that he can be a leader. He has the arm strength and the intelligence to play the QB position, and his accuracy needs work, but it is not terrible by any means. He possesses athletic ability that is extremely rare for a QB.

I think it would be the wrong move for the Saints and a disservice to Hill to abandon continuing to develop him as a QB.... However, it would also be a mistake to not take advantage of what he can do to help our team right now.

He’s probably got better straight-line speed than every guy on the team except maybe for Ted Ginn... and that race might be really close at this point in time.

The Saints obviously have a goal line package in the playbook for him. They also have some plays up their sleeve for the punt team with Hill as the up-back. He demonstrated the ability to be a dangerous kick returner, by almost breaking one vs the Browns, and I have to think they are continuing to try to find ways to use him.

Seneca Wallace

A solid comparison, only Hill is bigger, stronger, and faster than Wallace was. Kordell Stewart is another guy that I think is comparable to Hill, but again... Hill is bigger and faster than Stewart was as well. However, Stewart was a better passer than Hill is at this point.

I just hope that an offensive package is developed to get Hill on the field between the 20’s that will create pressure on defenses to handle.

As stated in some of the previous posts, even if Hill is used as a decoy, and it forces a timeout by the defense or gets 1 defender out of position... good things can happen for the Saints.

Lots of people don't remember how rough Steve Young was in his late 20's.

Brad Smith was a QB who switched to WR. Sucked when he killed me in Fantasy because he got QB points one game as a WR.
