Having Babies (1 Viewer)

When my 3ex was about to have my youngest son (her first baby), she went to her scheduled doctor's appointment one Monday morning, and the doctor put her in the hospital, and put her on a "drip". It got to be Monday afternoon, and the delivery doctor came in and asked me, "Are you a football fan?"

"Yes," was my reply.

He said, "Well, so am I. I'm going to watch Monday Night Football tonight, so we'll have this done by kick-off."

Well, sure enough, about 5pm, my wife wasn't getting any closer to having the baby, and was in serious pain. The nurse came in, and said, "Look here." So I went around and looked, and I could see the top of my baby's head in the birth canal. It looked like it was twisted up in there.

She said, "You are going to have to help me roll this baby out of her. Now don't you be afraid, and you roll on her when I tell you to." and she called the doctors back in.

So the doctors came back in, and got my wife propped up, and me and the nurse, each on either side, ROLLED on that belly when the doctor told us to. My son was born at 6:05pm.

Now this had done some considerable ripping down there to my wife, but the delivery doctor sat there and slowly and meticulously sewed her up, and had the most soothing bedside manner that I had ever witnessed as he talked to her while he was working...

But sure enough, he was done by 7pm. :9:

Zach had a red, raised, "place" right on the top of his head, like a red "wart", what we used to call his "siren", that didn't fade until he was about two years old, from where he was caught up in the birth canal.

Oh, yeah, and then there was the time my cat had kittens when I was 13, and while she was having the second one, I had to go brush my teeth to get ready for school, and the cat followed me through the house, with little kitten paws hanging out of her as she ran to see where I had went...wait...too many stories...:sulkoff:

Watching my two children come into the world was a bag of mixed emotions...very humbling...lot's of joy and pride...and a ton of anxiety...I recommend it to everyone...:hihi:

Only Experience i have , is when i was 15 my girlfriend at that time went into hospital in alot of pain in her abdomen which turned out to be a very early miscarriage.

I wasn't sure how i felt at the time , to be honest im still not sure ... I prefer not to think about it or talk about it ... infact not many people even know about this.

Thats all i can really offer up.

I have no isight. (no kids yet) but I do know that after watching Knocked Up, I am petrified of having a baby.

Because my wife had blood pressure problems she had to go for NST's every week. Well the last on she had her blood pressure shot up to 185/110. They kept her in the hospitable over the weekend to monitor her. The doctors decided to induce instead of fighting her pressure for 3 more weeks. The sent us home Sunday night and had to be back Tuesday night. They started inducing when we got there Tuesday night. Well all day Wednesday she stayed at 2 cm and the nurse kept talking about a c-section. Well about 6:00 her epidural was starting to wear off so they called the anesthesiologist. right before she came in the nurse checked and my wife was at 4 cm now. While the anesthesiologist was in the room about to re administer the dose the nurse came running in and started yelling don't dose her for the c-section. The doctor had ordered the c-section because my wife wasn't progressing and her blood pressure was still high but since she hit 4 cm the doctor wanted to wait a little while longer to see what happens. They checked her again at 7:00 and she was fully dilated. At 7:38 my son was born. Easily the best day of my life hands down. Never knew you could love someone so much so soon.

Now it's your job to spoil your nephew......

All of my kids have a story about their births.

Oldest son - I developed PIH (Pregnancy Induced Hypertension) at around the 4th month. I went to the OB every week from that pont on. At week 32 I developed toxemia & had to go directly to the hospital from the doctor's office next door. This was the week right before the Super Bowl in 1978. Dallas & Denver were playing that year. I was forbidden to watch TV, listen to the radio or even take phone calls. I begged my dr. to be able to watch the Super Bowl & he relented. I said before the game that if I had a son and the Broncos won, I would name him Craig (for Craig Morton). Alas, it was a terrible game which the Cowboys won. The very next day (Monday), I had an ultrasound done to see if the baby was big enough to induce. Ultrasound technology was very new then & I was one of the first pregnant women to use the machine in St Francis Hospital in Monroe. In fact, there was a rather large group around it watching as it was done. That afternoon I went into spontaneous labor at about 4:30. My OB happened to be in the hospital because another one of his patients was about to give birth. He told them to bump the other lady from the delivery room & get me there pronto. My son (Erik) was born at 5:40. Because my OB had not been able to see the results of the ultrasound yet, he tried to hold the baby back until the pediatrician could get there (in 5:00 traffic). I found out later that an airplane was on standby at the airport in case the baby had to be flown to Shreveport. The Neo-Natal Unit was still being built at that time & most premies had to be flown to Shreveport. Well...Erik was born weighing 4 lbs and 11 ounces. The doctors said he had to develop on his own because of my PIH & he was larger and stronger than expected. He only had to stay in the hospital for a week.

Daughter - Again I developed PIH at around Week 33. I stayed in the hospital for a week during the week of Thanksgiving. They sent me home on a Monday. My mom insisted I stay at my parent's house in Bastrop (I was living in West Monroe at the time). On the following Thursday I went into labor at about 2:00 p.m. My mom called an old family friend who was a deputy sheriff. He drove me to Monroe in a Sheriff's Department vehicle - a station wagon in case I had to deliver on the way there. I was sitting in a chair giving them information when I informed them that unless they wanted me to give birth in that chair, they better get me to the delivery room. I was right. My daughter was born before I could even be sterilized. She was born at 5:00 p.m. weighing 5 lbs and 1 oz. She had to stay in the hospital for a week after birth also.

Middle Son - This was my only pregnancy without PIH. He was born in Los Angeles at full term and weighed 8 lbs 13 ounces and was 24 inches long. The nurses kept asking me in the delivery room if I was sure I wasn't having twins. :hihi: I went to the hospital at midnight on Good Friday & he was born at 5:45 a.m. This was also my longest labor which really wasn't very long compared to many,

Youngest Son - I was 37 when he was born & I was carefully monitored because I developed the PIH fairly early. He was carried to full term. I had worked until January 5. I went into labor on January 6 about 1:30 p.m. My husband had to drive me to Burbank, CA from our home in Van Nuys. Everytime he would hit a bump, I would have another contraction. My son was born at 5:38 p.m. He weight 9 lbs 1 oz. The unusual thing about his birth is that it snowed in L.A. the day he was born, which is an extremely unusual occurance. I was looking at snow on the mountains outside the birthing room (yes, things had progressed to birthing rooms by 1989) while I was in labor. This was the only birth where my husband was in the room at the time of birth.

So I had two tiny babies & two big babies. :) They are now grown & I'm proud of them all.

I had that same kind of problem. I didn't want an epidural (I was afraid it would make me feel paralyzed), and Roberta kept threatening that she'd call an OB and make me have a c-section if my blood pressure didn't come down. She said an epidural would do that. So I relented and it turned out fine. It was mild, I could still walk, and the blood pressure went down.

Movies are movies. Don't go by that. Also, don't associate with women who like to tell you how AWFUL and EXCRUCIATING and traumatic it is to have a baby. It's not a contest. Yes, some women have terrible trouble. Most don't. Yes, some women have complications. Most don't. And even those who do--I had the blood pressure thing and another thing that I will spare the fellas the details about--usually it works out. You're in a professional environment with skilled people, doing the most ordinary thing you can possibly do. Don't make it a big deal until it is one, and don't listen to those women who tell bad stories.

One and done. How people have more than one blows my mind.

Jan, I missed your post earlier. Good stories. Interesting how one woman can have a variety of birth experiences.

Oh I know it's just a movie but its can also be very real. Some of the women telling me stories are my very close friends, who have had miserable experiences, some I was around for afterwards. I think it's not so much the fear of the labor and birth as it is of the change in our lives. I have been married for almost 15 years and you get very comfortable with how your life is. I am still young and have time (although my nagging mother disagrees) but I just don't know if I will be really ready again. We were seriously thinking about it before Katrina but then our lives were turned upside. I haven't felt the same since.

I understand that. To this day I feel like I was ambushed. But I'm just saying, if you decide to, don't fill your head with nightmares.
