HOF Chances Among Active Coaches According To The 33RD Team (2 Viewers)

Payton is going to have a tough time not becoming Mike McCarthy. Leaving NOLA after failing to plan for and build the future was a blow. He's going to have to prove himself in Denver.

CSP in, sooner or later. His legacy is way better than his record. Talking about Katrina. Revolutionizing the NFL offense in 2011. Going 7-9 four times literally without a defense (or a QB). Also everybody knows he would have played another SB without Cavaletto. A QB wizard, making the most out of Bridgwater, Winston and (spectacularly) Taysom Hill.

McCarthy, should definitely not be in. Had a great record with Rodgers in his prime, but nothing else.
Is Payton really a QB wizard? I can credit him with putting restrictions on players like Winston to keep them from losing the game. But I just don't know if he's to credit for the success of Brees. He never developed anyone into a starter not named Drew.

Agreed on Payton.

The same thing you said about McCarthy can also apply to Bill Belichick. Belichick is 79-87 without Tom Brady.

Kerry Collins had his best years under Payton as OC of the Giants. They even went to a SB. He turned a 5th round
baseball prospect Quincy Carter into a 3,000 yd passer in Dallas. The answer is yes, Payton is a Qb. wizard.

The google quote you saw was taken from his HOF bio. I saw it as well.

here is what it says. Notice how it includes post season games.

In his 10 seasons as head coach of the 49ers, Walsh compiled an impressive 102-63-1 mark that included 10 wins in 14 postseason games. Under Walsh, the 49ers won six NFC Western Division championships and NFC titles in 1981, 1984, and 1988. His Regular season total was 92-59-1
Ok bro. I didn't read, just posted the numbers. My bad. So much for shortcuts right đź‘Ť

We'll find out for sure soon enough.

Brees is a HOFer on his own, ofc. Payton didn’t have much material to work on other than Drew (in regard of developing starters), but literally anybody who played for him played well, even Teddy, McCown, and Siemian (as much as he was limited)

Lovie Smith’s totals really surprised me.
Lovie Smith had 3 losing season in 9 years with the Bears, while winning COTY, taking his team to a Super Bowl 1 season and getting them to an NFC championship game another one. He was fired after they missed the playoffs after going 10-6 (tie-breaker). What screwed Lovie was the Bucs being the Bucs and then becoming "tank commander" for the Texans. Urlacher said the Bears are suffering from the "Lovie Smith curse." lol

Those "restrictions" had more to do with our team construction more than Winston; you know, the whole busted O-line, UDFAs, etc, etc. Things opened up after the Giants game.
But I credit Coach Payton with knowing how to put a QB in position to win. There is no such thing as a QB wizard per se, as much as it is building a system for a QB. That is what separates the good coaches. He built the offensive system around what Drew did in San Diego and added his "great game planner" sprinkles to it as well. The whole "fit the system" is not a CSP thing because he builds the system around the QB.

Switch Walsh and Del Rio and you’ve got it.

Rivera - 98 regular season wins
Del Rio - 93
Walsh - 92
L. Smith - 92
Bum Phillips - 82

Rivera, Del Rio and Lovie Smith’s totals really surprised me.

…

Most regular season wins for a coach with a losing record: Norv Turner, 114-122.
Lovie is a underrated coach. He got cursed with runs in Tampa and Houston.
But he’s the second best modern day Bears coach after Ditka.

Looking at both their records, they might both get in.
They each have a little over 150 wins, if they can survive another few years and get to that 190-200 win range, they are in.

Pederson becomes likely, if not a lock, if he can bring Jacksonville their first SB. He already has one during his 2nd year as HC when Wentz and Foles were his QBs. A few AFCCGs and SB runnerups with the Jags could move him up too.

Shanahan and McDermott need a SB and winning longevity for about a decade more to have a case. McCarthy will go from being perceived as carried by Favre/Rodgers in the regular season to an all time great coach overnight in the media eyes if he wins a SB with the Cowboys to go with the Packers ring.

Tomlin is close to a đź”’. His win percentage is just above Payton, but has 2 SB appearances and never had a losing season. Payton is close to a . The 1 year suspension puts him at the bottom of the (y) and means he needs a 2nd SB appearance and maybe win to be a đź”’. Payton's time with Denver could hurt his HoF chances. If Wilson doesn't perform, then Carroll with 2 SB appearances is well ahead of Payton.

Tomlin is a lock. He’s one of three Steelers coaches in the past fifty years. And each has one a championship.
I said this earlier, but the closer Payton gets to 200 wins, the more likely he gets in. Maybe getting to 180 or 190 is a lock.
Only 1 coach has that many wins and isn’t in the Hall. Marty S. And he doesn’t have a championship.

I think Payton's chances of when he gets in relies heavily on his tenure with Denver. If he tanks and ends up fired I think he may be looking at a wait to get in. If he kills it and wins a SB then he'll get in 1st ballot.

Yep. I was worried about him going to Tampa based on what he did in Chicago but they screwed him hard. And then he became the tank commander for the Texans and then he screwed them..lol.
