We requested permission and also interviewed a handful of very talented and qualified guys including a bunch from the McVay/Shanahan coaching tree, but it doesn't seem like any of these guys want to come to come here. I think this is why we keep interviewing. It's not because we are doing our due diligence, it's because we keep getting turned down.

Allen isn’t officially a lame duck coach, but everyone knows he basically is. So there’s a good chance you come here for one season. Why would anyone give up multiple seasons somewhere else to come here and only have one year to try and turn things around? This is why I think we end up promoting Curry or have to settle on someone that really doesn’t have the qualifications to do the job.

Is that true of the +/-14 other teams that haven't hired a new coordinator as well?

This thread lacks the perspective of the entirety of the nfl and how rare OC positions are
Also lacks the perspective of how the Saints really like to use senior bowl to scout and network
Why do people keep saying this? I’ve seen Underhill repeat this line and it’s disingenuous to say the least. When we say something along the lines of ‘no-one wants this job under a lame duck head coach’, we don’t mean literally no one will take the job.

What we mean is we’re going to seriously struggle to hire anyone who is being interviewed by multiple teams. The thing is, that happened just last year when Liam Coen turned us down to be Kentucky OC.

Because it doesn’t hold up to any historical scrutiny at all

Hardly ANYONE has filled their open OC positions. Stop whining about things before considering facts!

What doesn’t hold up to any historical scrutiny? You’re missing my point. Nobody is saying no-one wants the job, we’re saying it’s unattractive to candidates getting multiple interviews which is absolutely a fair assessment.

There’s a reason Pete Carmichael was still OC this season and it’s not because Allen or Loomis really wanted him to stay.

I will not get into the desirability factor, but I will continue to point out we have yet to hire any outsiders on the offense staff (by outsiders, I mean people with no connections to Sean). I still think it's probably Curry (Gruden in an unofficial capacity as well).

The reason PC kept the OC job this year is because DA identified 3 guys last year that he thought were better options than PC. When he could not get those 3 guys he went back to PC. It was not a comprehensive search it was very limited to 3 guys.

3 guys turning it down is not the same as it being an unattractive job. That's especially so when last year when those guys turned down the job, we had no QB, Shaheed had no fully emerged, and there was not A.T. Perry. Now we have Carr who is basically a to 10 to 15 guy depending on how good the OC is, it's clear that Shaheed could be a star, it's clear Olave could be a star, and Perry is a high upside developmental prospect. That's a much more attractive opportunity than it was last year.

It's not a top 5 OC job, but it's in the same range as ATL, Car, T.B., Cleveland, and most other jobs that are open except the Chargers. and the Bengals which Pitcher took.

Kodi Burns, who was obviously fired, was an outsider to Payton, Gruden, and the NFL in general.

And we haven't hired anyone yet this year so that could dramatically change going forward.

So there are 18 OC openings (there abouts)
Let’s say half of those are ‘call your own plays bc HC is defensive’ (I think it’s fewer , but let’s say 9)
Maybe there are 3 GREAT possibilities
And we won’t get those bc we don’t have top 5 draft choice or rookie contract up and coming QB
We were never in contention for those - if a poster wants to imagine we had a shot at a GREAT candidate, they are free to , but there’s really no reason to expect it
So we’re one of 6 landing spots for the next tier of COULD be very good/great OCs
The prevailing arguments are there are more than 6 of those potentially good/great candidates

If coaches are turning us down, then this is the reason why.

What aspiring coach would hypothetically go to a team that will have a coaching change in a year?
