I Hate the Internal Revenue Service (1 Viewer)

My ongoing battle over my 2018 return that started with them sending me a $28,000(!) supplemental tax bill that was clearly in error was finally resolved last week after about 10 rounds of back and forth over the last 18 months. They finally agreed I don't owe them another gddam dime.

It can happen!
That is awesome!

The IRS needs about twice as many employees as it currently has.

Anytime they try to staff up, politicians funded by the 1% tell everyone that it is bad for them, when in reality, most of the services the IRS provides helps middle class people.

They're gonna need a lot more soon if they're going to start tracking every bank account over $600. Or is it transaction? I've seen both reported and sometimes both within the same article.

And I'm sure that they offered to compensate you for all your lost time? ;-)

Perfect example of why a flat tax on all income would be a great step...

Don't really need Humans to track that sort of thing.

Lol, no, it's absolutely not. If you want to make a jacked up tax policy worse, that's one way to do it. What I'd rather do is target all of the loopholes and tax shelters the wealthy gets and leave the progressive tax rates as they are. The issue is that the wealthy are not paying their fair share, with effective rates very often in the single digits. Effective rates for people making $250k+ should be in the 30% range. I used to do taxes for wealthy individuals and without giving anything away, let's just say they don't pay nearly what they should.

That's not going to happen so it's irrelevant, but the amount of money that's been uncollected due to intentional political sabotage is astounding.

Were we enforcing the laws we have we would not be needing to raise rates or borrow so much to pay what we use.

That's what I always say, but then the people in charge wouldn't be able to give the "right" people the tax breaks they "need." :tinfoilhat:

I have done it so many times I don't even have the energy to explain the myriad problems with a flat tax except to tell you we already have a flat tax within the brackets except for rich folks who can pay themselves in ways that allow them to avoid paying what the rest of us do.

Simply put, it's not fair that I pay a higher rate on my income than someone who makes 1000 times what I do. And it never will be.

Precisely.

I do think a flat tax would be amazing and could work quite well. Would just need to tie sales to a sales number or a tax card or QR code you scan on your phone before you check out at the register. Once total purchases pass certain thresholds, the tax rate increases and is automatically calculated at the register. This would be really simple and solve a ton of problems. Spend $5k a year? No taxes. Spend $100M/yr, pay 40%. Then again, I guess all big ticket items at that point would just move overseas. Hell, I don't know what the right and wrong answer is. I do know it's wrong that I pay more tax than many of the 100 biggest companies in the US and way more percentage than the Billionaires. I also think it's wrong that the new administration thinks being able to look at checking accounts is a really horrible idea to try and solve it.

As for the IRS. They are horrible. I'm getting double and triple taxed, I've been trying to get my 2019 1099's for over two years and can't get them. Filled out forms a half dozen times, each time I'm being asked to send them to different addresses with different amount money orders and each time they get sent back to me months later for one reason or another. I can't get anyone on the phone, in the odd circumstance when I do the information I get is not correct. Then I get letters in the mail that amount to fines plus penalties that I have to pay and hope I can get refunded at some magical point in the future on the very issue I've been trying to get addressed for two years.

It's infuriating.
