Ian Book (3 Viewers)

i didn't think he played that poorly as some people are saying. you gotta remember who his cast of characters are. i think he could def. et a lot better.
He did not play that bad but you can see his physical limitations and by comparison the guys ahead of him Winston and Dalton look and perform like Starting Caliber NFL QB's.

Too much hyperbole is being used here. I do not recall anyone being a "fan" of Book.

I guess that depends on which timeframe you're talking about.

Not that I'm going to go back and dig for it, but I'm fairly certain that there were some last year around this time (or at least before Winston's preseason MNF performance) that were clamoring for Book over Winston and Taysom.

I agree. Fans are so quick to attack a guy playing with a short deck and not getting any real help. I thought when he got some blocking he threw some nice passes. I tbink they should carry him and coach him up.

We need to quit making excuses for him. He might not be playing with all the 1st string offense- but he's not playing against all the 1st team defense either. It's a mixed bag. If you are not seeing improvement now, then it's time to find someone else. Ian Book will never be an NFL starter. The best he will be is a backup.

Ian Book is not going make this active roster. The questions - is he worth stashing on the practice for a "just in case" need or can the Saints find another project QB to put on the practice squad.

Book may make the Practice Squad - but next offseason or at the draft, it's time to find another QB. Dalton could likely be the backup for a few more years. He's only 34 now.

The 3rd QB needs to be someone with a high ceiling... instead finding someone with a high floor.

I disagree with most of this, but especially the last sentence. Why does Book have a high floor vs. a high ceiling? A high floor would mean he's good now but doesn't have much room to improve... I think he has a pretty low floor (he's extremely raw) and a potentially high ceiling.

Look, he's a boom-or-bust player. If he was drafted in the 1st round he'd be a bust. But he was a 4th round pick. Taysom Hill was a guy everyone thought wasn't good enough to play QB, and yet he has a winning record at the position and a 70% career completion percentage. Obviously the staff that developed him sees something in Book or they wouldn't be wasting their time and subjecting the kid to the ire of enraged fans.

Maybe I need to read back through the thread but I don't see a lot of excuses being made for him? I just see some people saying "hey why are our heads exploding over this, other than anger?" He crapped the bed completely vs. the Texans, and last game he improved. Was it good enough? No, but there was OBVIOUS improvement in his huddle operations, communication, tempo, and the way he threw the ball.

The internal calculus/armchair GMing of "well Dalton is 34 now, so the square root of a Book's 3-year rookie contract divided by Mercury retrograde" is useless. He is a quarterback, he knows the offense, and he has some talent. If he can get better at reocgnizing coverages, going through his progressions, and using the pocket, we have a pretty decent QB on our hands. I see no harm in giving him another year on the practice squad.

He’s gotten a raw deal and sees heavy pressure but looks like his tendency when pressured is to run and not climb the pocket. Seems more flustered. But then again he does get a lot of pressure. Doesn’t seem more than a backup but maybe worth another look to someone.

Never has been and never will be an NFL caliber drop back passer. That being said he never has been and never will be an NFL caliber runner.
What he is and was simply was a college caliber winner, a trait that is irrelevant in the NFL as many a QB like Danny Weurful and Tim Tebow.
So I ask, what in the heck did Payton see other than himself in the guy and what’s the point now in investing any more time in him.
I’d scour the waiver wires for another young QB who at least will sit in the pocket and go through his progressions before running scared out of the pocket.

Ian Book cemented that Sean Payton, while an elite play caller (at least for the first half of his Saints career), could not develop quarterbacks. Drew Brees was his savior. How many draft picks did we waste on QBs and not a single one panned out. The closest was Chase Daniel and he never got a consistent start anywhere.

Tony Romo?

Book is marginally good enough to avoid any fines and loss of draft picks for tanking while actually trying to tank. Good to have a guy like that around just in case. That may or may not be seen as a compliment. But it is a skill.

Doesn't matter what he did at Notre Dame! Other than QBs named Joe, name a QB from that school that has done anything worthwhile?
How far back you want to go? Daryl Lamonica was a pretty good qb in pros.
